When you're searching for all-natural beauty products that are non-toxic and safe, there is a long list of ingredients you need to watch out for. Among some of the most common toxins consumers are warned against are parabens and phthalates. Although the jury is still out on whether the levels of these chemicals used in beauty products is actually dangerous or not, it's recommended that you avoid buying products that contain them.
Parabens
The term "paraben" refers to either of two antifungal agents that are commonly used as additives in beauty products – methylparaben and propylparaben. There is little evidence that they cause any harm and, in fact, they don't stay in the body long. They are quickly absorbed through the skin and released from the body through urine.
However, there are some potential risks. Some people have skin sensitivity issues, although this is quite rare. The more serious risks pertain to reproduction and development. Parabens have a slight effect on estrogen levels and can lower sperm count in men. There's a possibility that they increase the expression of cells in breast tumors as well.
Although the amount of parabens used in beauty products is very low, there are still worries over the cumulative effects of using these products over time.
Phthalates
Phthalates are plasticizing chemicals that are used primarily to give flexibility, durability, longevity and transparency to plastic materials. They are used in cosmetics for a number of purposes including making it easier for materials to dissolve in the product or giving the product a bitter taste.
It's very likely that phthalates in high levels are toxic to the reproductive system and developmental process. In animal studies, they've been shown to cause birth defects. Some phthalates are banned in Europe.
Parabens, Phthalates and You
The parabens and phthalates used in cosmetics are considered safe by the FDA, but this doesn't mean they're without risks. The cumulative effects are something to consider. It's best to avoid products that use these chemicals, especially if you are pregnant or nursing.
