What is emotional intelligence? Why should you develop yours? Ask three close friends or relatives the following question, “If I didn’t know you better I would think you were….” write about what they say and if it was what you expected.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to sense other people’s emotion. It also require you to control emotion for yourself. To be effective leaders, emotional intelligence is very important because leaders need to be aware of follower’s signal or symptom. As it was mentioned in the article, follower or subordinate have difficulty saying the fact to leaders. It is important to be aware of people’s emotion. Also it is not better for leaders to show their emotion every time. As it was claimed at HPR, leader’s mood will affect to followers very much. When leaders are in good mood, surroundings can feel that. On the other hand, when leaders are in bad mood surroundings can also get bad mood. That is why leaders need to control their emotion. When leaders have calm emotion, they can think about the problem and lead the organization to good way.
I asked my friends what they would think about me if they do not know me. One of my friend told me that she thinks that I am bluntly or dislike her because I did not laugh often at first time we met. I will not surprise about her answer. My other friend told me that I am extremely cautious to my surroundings until I get used to them. Of course I do like my friend and I was not trying to look cold. Also I do not consider that is good thing, so recently I try to be friendly with the person I met for the first time.
I read in other article that says people’s impression will be decided in seven seconds from their first meeting and it takes long time to change that to other impression. Seven second is very short, however first impression will help you to have good relationship with your friends or partners. I expect that being cheerful and giving the positive impression is one of important thing in business and in daily life.
My other friend told me that he had positive image on me when we first met. I met him after I was told that I looked cold. I tried not to look cold to someone I met for the first time after being told like that. Hearing about his comment, I felt happy about it. It is better to give positive image than to providing negative image on me. I consider if we can have positive image on both of us, it lead us to create good relationship and it is same at business scene.
My last friend told me that he thought I am very talkative person. On the other hand I have image on her that he is very quiet person. I think he thought I was very talkative because he does not talk so much and I thought he was quiet because I was talking to fill up the silence. I do not mind being silence with him now, however it made me nervous when we first met. I found out from his comment that even if we have opposite character, we sometimes can built good relations.
To write this article, I asked three friends. Some opinions for me at first sight was unexpected. I felt that getting high number at emotional intelligence need to have training. People cannot always suspect what people feel about yourself correctly. However to have emotional intelligence at business scene will be big advantage to create better relationship. You might be able to build good relationship without emotional intelligence, but if you have it your relationship between your friend or partner will be great one.
