37.大宗師がお話された。「人が世間で何か事をなす時は、あるいは他人の賛成も受け、または非難も受けるようになるが、そこに対して何の考えもなしに、ただ嬉しがるだけか、嫌がるだけであるのは、すなわち幼い子どものようなものである。人々が何だかだと言う時は、自分は自分の実際を調査して、良心に恥じるところがないことなら、たとえ千万人が非難をしても、不撓不屈の勇力で粘り強く進むべきであり、他人がいくら賛成をしても、良心の上でできないことならば、惜しげもなく捨てることをためらうべきでない・ためらわないのである。これがすなわち、自力のある工夫人のすることである。」
37.대종사 말씀하시기를 [사람이 세상에서 무슨 일을 할 때에는 혹(もしかして。もしかすると。ひょっとして。あるいは;그러할 리는 없지만 만일에.) 남의 찬성도 받고 또는(それとも。または。あるいは;그렇지 않으면.) 비난도 받게 되나니, 거기에 대하여 아무 생각 없이 한갓 좋아만 하거나 싫어만 하는 것은 곧 어린 아이와 같은 일이니라. 남들이 무엇이라고 할 때에는 나는 나의 실지를 조사(어떤 일이나 사물의 내용을 알기 위하여 자세히 살펴보거나 찾아봄)하여 양심에 부끄러울 바가 없는 일이면 비록 천만 사람이 비난을 하더라도 백절불굴의 용력으로 꾸준히 진행할(進む、進める) 것이요, 남이 아무리(いくら。どんなに;정도가 매우 심하게.) 찬성을 하더라도 양심상 하지 못할 일이면 헌신같이 버리기를 주저하지 말 것(shouldn’t hesitate)이니, 이것이 곧 자력 있는 공부인이 하는 일이니라.]
37.The Founding Master said, “When people try to accomplish something in this world, they may receive others’ approval or criticisms. If they simply feel pleased or displeased without giving it any thought, they are just like a child. When others criticize me, I must examine the situation, and if my conscience tells me I have no reason to be ashamed, then even though thousands of people criticize me, I must proceed apace with indomitable courage. On the other hand, however broad the approval, if my conscience tells me it is something I shouldn’t do, then I shouldn’t hesitate to throw it out like an old shoe. This is what a practitioner with self-power does.”
