1993年の7月下旬、日没からほどない夜に、私は神戸国際フルートコンクールの出場者用のホテルに到着しました。その上品なホテルは蒸し暑い神戸の繁華街に面していました。中では何十人ものフルート奏者が一次予選に向けて一心不乱に練習しており、私は音の洪水に飲み込まれそうになりました。
出場者の中には何人かの知った顔がありましたが、続く10日間の選考過程において、世界中から来たフルート奏者と新たに友人となりました。彼らの多くとの関係は、今日に至るまで続いています。
コンクールの運営は大変洗練されており、伴奏者や、ファイナルでの神戸室内合奏団の演奏レベルも大変すばらしいものでした。真のフルートファンや幅広い層のフルートを学ぶ人々、ハイレベルなコンクールに興味を持って集まった地元の人々等から成る聴衆は、熱心で温かでした。
そしてコンクールのために課題曲を仕上げること自体が、既に重要な学習プロセスでした。神戸でこれらの素晴らしい演奏家たちと出会い、熱心な聴衆の前で演奏をすることができたことは、非常に得難い経験でした。
直接的な結果として私は賞を得ることができ、その後何年にもわたり、日本で公演やマスタークラスを実施する機会に恵まれました。何度目かの来日の際には、日本の誇る美しいフルートブランド、アルタスの創始者である田中修一と出会い、以降、私はアルタスを使用し続けています。
私は神戸国際フルートコンクールがもたらしてくれた日本の聴衆や学生、市井の人々や日本文化との出会いに、心から感謝しています。神戸でこれらの素晴らしい演奏家たちと出会い、熱心な聴衆の前で演奏をすることができたことは、非常に得難い経験でした。

Experience of Kobe Competition :
One evening in late July 1993, shortly after nightfall, I arrived at the modest (but blissfully cool!) competitors’ hotel, on a busy street in a very warm and humid Kobe. I was bowled over by the aviary-like sounds of dozens of flute players, all frantically warming-up for the first round of the Kobe International Flute Competition. I met up with some friends and fellow students but over the course of the next 10 days I met so many other new flute-playing friends from around the world and I am still in regular contact with many of them! The competition was superbly organised and my pianist, harpsichordist and indeed the Kobe Chamber orchestra in the final were all superb players and wonderfully supportive. Also the audience was very enthusiastic and friendly - a fabulous mix of real flute fans, flute students of various ages and stages and local people who were simply interested in hearing young players competing at the very top level. It had already been an important learning process getting all the repertoire ready for Kobe, but it was really invaluable to meet and hear all these wonderful players, and perform in the concert hall in Kobe for such enthusiastic audiences. As a direct result of having won a prize in Kobe, I have been invited to Japan many times over the years to perform concertos, recitals and give masterclasses. On one of these trips I also met Suichi Tanaka, the founder of the Altus flute brand, and since then I have been proud to play on these beautiful Japanese instruments.
I am so very grateful to the Kobe competition for giving me the opportunity to bring me closer to Japanese audiences, students and the Japanese people and culture.
