先生は哲学者のジョン・デューイに師事し、日本思想史が専門だった。だが、日本に関することなら自分で準備して、何でも教えてくれた。私の日本文学研究の原点となる、松尾芭蕉の「おくの細道」や近松門左衛門の「国性爺合戦」、兼好法師の「徒然草」を教えてくれたのも先生だった。

In the end he was teaching Heian, Genroku, and Buddhist literature courses at the students’ request. Tsunoda-sensei was extremely exploited, but I believe it cheered him to have young Americans, back from the war, devoting themselves to learning about Japan.
I learned a great deal from his teaching. Among my translations, Essays in Idleness and The Narrow Road to Oku both received favorable reviews, and I had studied them both under Sensei’s guidance.
It is no exaggeration to say that if Sensei were not there, I would not be here today.
