桐生市国際交流協会で掲載された
カナダ出身のナタリー・ベネット（Natalie Bennett）さんの
「桐生の魅力」について書かれた文章がとても良かったので、
掲載された内容そのままにご紹介致します。

市内の小中学校で英語を教えているカナダ出身のALTナタリー・ベネットさんか ら、桐生についての印象などを記した原稿をお寄せいただきましたのでご紹介します（日本語訳もほぼご本人がされました）。
ナタリーさんには、今年5月のコロンバス州立大学学生一行来桐の際の通訳や資料等の翻訳をはじめ、料理教室の講師などで積極的に国際交流事業にご協力いただいています。
When I first moved to Kiryu five years ago, it seemed a quiet town with not too many things to do. There was a lack of people out in the streets and many shops were always shuttered. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, however, I soon realized that Kiryu had a wealth of treasures waiting to be found.
Wandering around Kiryu, I found lots of beautiful old buildings, quality retail shops and quaint Mom ’n Pop restaurants. Some were on the main streets, but still more were hidden down side alleys and back streets, making it a fun adventure to try to find the best ones. It seemed that many eras were present in Kiryu simultaneously. You could take a step into a store and be taken back to the early Showa or the Meiji or even the Edo period in an instant. However, that’s not to say that Kiryu didn’t have its modern conveniences like combinis, family restaurants and superstores, but it hadn’t descended into the bland cardboard and concrete banality that plagues many other cities in Japan and indeed, in my country of Canada as well. Kiryu maintained a unique charm and character that hadn’t tossed aside all traces of the past even as it moved forward.
The residents of Kiryu take active pride in preserving, maintaining and growing their town in a meaningful direction. There’s quite an artistic vibe too, with clothing shops, cafes, bars and restaurants focusing on quality materials and sophisticated atmosphere. So, perhaps Kiryu’s greatest treasure is not found in something physical, but in the spirit of its people. I hope Kiryu continues to remember the things that count and that the young people don’t leave, but instead invest in this town I now call home.
五年前、初めて桐生に来た時、最初静かで、することがあまりないのではという印象でした。道を歩いていても人があまりいなくて、沢山の店はいつも閉まっていまし た。最初はどんな町だろうかと思いましたが、見つかることを待つ宝の山があること に、まもなく気が付きました。
桐生を見て回って、多くの美しくて古い建物や上品な小売店、古風で小さなレストラ ンを見つけました。いくつかは大通りにあっても、さらにもっと多くのお店は路地裏に隠れていたので、見つけるのは面白い冒険になりました。桐生にはいくつもの時代 が同時に存在しているようでした。お店に入るとまるで昭和初期や明治、江戸時代にもタイムスリップできるようでした。とはいっても、桐生に現代の便利な物、例えば、コンビ二やファミリーレストランや スーパーがないということではないですが、桐生は、他の日本の街や私の出身のカナダの街を悩ませる、ありふれたダンボールやコンクリートの街へは陥っていませんで した。桐生は、時が刻まれても過去の面影を押しやらずユニークな魅力と個性を維持していました。
桐生市民は桐生を保持し、有意義な方向に成長させていることへの誇りを隠しません。その質や洗練された空間へのこだわりは、服飾品店やカフェ、居酒屋、レストラ ンに見られ、芸術的な雰囲気を醸し出しています。ですから、多分桐生の一番大切な 宝は物ではなくて、人々の心の中に見つけられます。桐生市民はそんな大切なことを忘れないように、そして若者は桐生から離れずに、今では私の故郷となった桐生に資することを私は望んでいます。
