The guppy (scientifically known as Poecilla Reticulata and anecdotally known as the &#8216million fish&#8217 and the &#8216rainbow fish&#8217) is one of the world&#8217 most widely owned and traded tropical fish species. It is arguably the most popular freshwater aquarium fish species. Guppies originate from the freshwater streams and rivers of South America but have been introduced to many different habitats across the world. They are highly adaptable and hardy fish and can thrive in many different environmental and ecological conditions. Interestingly guppies have 23 pairs of chromosomes, which include one pair of sex chromosomes, which is the same number as humans. Due to their popularity there are many different color morphs of guppy. Selectively bred guppies are normally characterized by having larger bodies and more intricate patterning (such as the snakeskin or grass guppies).
