今年の夏、私はカリフォルニアに帰りました！実家に帰って家族と友達と会ってすごく懐かしくて楽しかった。しかし日本にいた1年間でベイエリアの事が知ってた人はサンフランシスコ以外知らなかった。かくしてベイエリアの事は皆さんと紹介したいと思います！
I returned to my hometown in California this summer! It was so nostalgic and I had such a fun time hanging out with my friends and family. One thing I noticed in my one year of living in Japan was that the people around me didn't really know anything about the Bay Area other than it being the place with San Francisco. Since that's the case, I wanted to introduce the ins-and-outs of the Bay Area, from the perspective of a local citizen.
1．シリコンバレー / Silicon Valley
18年間以上、私はシリコンバレーで生まれ育った。シリコンバレーと言えば、テックの会社は多い。グーグル、アップル、マイクロソフト、フェースブックなど--なんでもある所です。その理由で、地域の代価はクソ高い。アパートの家賃は一ヶ月でだいたい¥230,000で,普通の昼ごはんは¥1,300ぐらい必要で、シリコンバレーは世界中で262の地域の中に19番一番高い地元です(アメリカ中で60の5)。そうやって考えるとあまり良くない感じしますがシリコンバレーの静かな周囲と技術力はとてもいいと思います--それと頭がいい人も多い。
I was born and raised in Silicon Valley for more than 18 years. If I think about the image of Silicon Valley, it would be that it is full of tech companies. Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, etc.--you name it, they have it. And because of that, the area is generally expensive as shit. Renting an apartment is about $2,300 per month, eating out requires around $13 for a typical lunch, and Silicon Valley is ranked 19 out of 262 in the world in terms of most expensive area to live in (5 out of 60 in USA). Even though that isn't the most appealing fact, I love Silicon Valley for its quiet surroundings and technological advancements--not to mention all of the smart people who live there.
2. 海！！/ BEACHES!
カリフォルニアの天気は最高！家の中にエアコン・暖房機使う必要はないし海はいつでも行ける！お水は冷たくて入れない時が多いけどカリフォルニア人は海の近くに毛布を置いて、毛布の上に伏せて、音楽聞いて、お菓子食べて、友達と甲羅干しするのが最高の休み。それとサンフランシスコと言えばPier 39とFisherman's Wharfという碼頭は綺麗な海見えます。そこで色々な楽しい事できるので観光客に人気！
The weather in California is fucking rad. No one ever uses the heater or air conditioner in their homes, and you could go to the beach at any time of the year if you really wanted to. Granted, the water is way too cold to actually swim in, but most Californians enjoy the beach by setting up a blanket near the shore and listening to music, eating snacks, and basking in the sun with friends. Not only that, but San Francisco has their infamous Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, which is another way to enjoy ocean-viewing. There's so much activity there, so it's especially great for tourists.
3. 名物な食べ物/Speciality foods
飯の多種多様はベイエリアの一番いい所かも知らない。料理についてなんでもあるし、その国の料理と味する。だがベイエリアと言えば、人気物はチーズバーガー、メキシカン料理、中国料理、フローズンヨーグルトとバブルティー。特にここのレストランはすごく人気です: イン・アンド・アウト(必食なハンバーガー)、チポトレ、パンダエクスプレス(アメリカしかないのオレンジチキン食べれる！)、ヨーグルトランドとTパンプス。
Maybe the best part of living in the Bay Area is the diversity in food. You can literally find any kind of cuisine you desire, and it'll likely taste fantastic. Aside from that, the Bay Area (and most of California) goes crazy for a few things: cheeseburgers, Mexican food, Chinese food, frozen yogurt, and boba/pearl/bubble tea. To name just a handful of popular eating spots, In n' Out burgers (a must-eat hamburger place in California), Chipotle, Panda Express (because Americans invented orange chicken), Yogurtland, and T-Pumps.
4. 遊園地 / Amusement parks
カリフォルニアにいた時、サンタクルーズのビーチボードウォークは週一回行ってた。友達や家族と行くとすごく楽しい時間になります。海に入っても遊園地のジェットコースターに乗っても、遊園地の名高い、体に悪い揚げ物食べても、誰でも楽しめると思います。他にある遊園地はカリフォルニア・グレートアメリカ(子供の時に一番好きだった遊園地)、シックスフラーグズ、レージングウォーターズなど。
While I was in California, I went to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk about once a week because it's a great place for hanging out with friends or bonding with family. While it's a good beach spot, it's also an amusement park with lots of fun rides and America's infamously unhealthy amusement park food. There's also California's Great America (a childhood favorite of mine), Six Flags, Raging Waters, etc..
カリフォルニアのベイエリアは色々な人がいる事は私の一番大好きな所です。誰にでもなにかが常にある事や自己同一性が認められるコミュニティと暮らせるって本当に感謝しています。賑やかし、ゆっくりできるし、静かにしているし、綺麗し、人は暖かい所考えると、ベイエリアは素敵な旅と思います。
What I love most about the Bay Area is how diverse the people are. I feel blessed to have lived in an area where self-identity is valued, and there is always something for everyone. It's a place of liveliness and comfort and peace and acceptance, and I can't think of a better place for people to travel to than my homeland.
