Motorola says settlement reached with TiVo over patent row

(Reuters) - Google Inc's Motorola Mobility said on Thursday it has reached an out-of-court settlement with video recorder pioneer TiVo Inc that could avert a trial to resolve their patent dispute. Motorola accused TiVo of infringing its patents for digital video recorders in February 2011 and TiVo filed a counterclaim in March last year.

Twitter partners with world's largest ad agency

(Reuters) - Twitter and WPP, the world's largest advertising agency, have combined forces to better focus advertising by using consumer data. The strategic partnership, announced on Thursday, means that WPP and its agencies such as GroupM and Kantar, will use Twitter's data trove to gain insight into customer behavior to pinpoint where to spend its ad dollars.

UK prime minister's ex-media chief denies phone hacking charges

LONDON (Reuters) - Andy Coulson, British Prime Minister David Cameron's former media chief and ex-editor of Rupert Murdoch's News of the World tabloid, pleaded not guilty to charges related to phone hacking on Thursday. The 45-year-old Coulson resigned from his job as director of communications in Downing Street in January 2011 and was arrested in July that year over allegations of criminal behavior at the tabloid he edited from 2003 to 2007.

N.Y. Post sued for libel for Boston bombing 'Bag Men' story

BOSTON (Reuters) - Two men whom the New York Post labeled as "Bag Men" in a front-page photo shortly after April's fatal Boston Marathon bomb attack have sued the newspaper for libel. The Post reported three days after the bombing that federal investigators were seeking the pair, 16-year-old Salaheddin Barhoum and 24-year-old Yassine Zaimi. The story ran just hours before the FBI released photos of the actual suspects they were pursuing.

Ex-Murdoch editor Brooks denies hacking charges

LONDON (Reuters) - Rebekah Brooks, a former top executive in Rupert Murdoch's media empire and a close friend of Prime Minister David Cameron, pleaded not guilty in court on Wednesday to charges related to phone hacking during her time running two national newspapers. Brooks stood in the dock at a packed Southwark Crown Court alongside her husband and other senior journalists from the now-defunct News of the World Sunday tabloid.

Amazon writes huge check for video rights to Dora, SpongeBob

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc wrote its largest-ever check for a subscription-streaming deal, securing hundreds of mostly childrens' TV programs from Viacom Inc for its Internet video service and ratcheting up pressure on rival Netflix. Amazon's deal with Viacom gives the world's largest Internet retailer broader access to hit shows including "Dora the Explorer" and "SpongeBob SquarePants." Netflix had previously conceded that losing access to those shows would be a blow.

Apple signs deal with Warner for streaming music: reports

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc has signed an agreement with Warner Music Group for music licenses in a push to create a streaming music service to unveil at a conference of its developers next week, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing anonymous sources. The iPhone maker has been considering a music-streaming service to complement iTunes, the largest repository of music for sale, for the past year, but progress has been slow in hashing out deals with music companies, sources told Reuters earlier.

After news editor boycott, U.S. attorney general loosens rules

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder loosened his rules for speaking with media editors on Friday during a second day of meetings with them about his Justice Department's handling of investigations that involve reporters, the editors said. Representatives from Reuters and ABC News met with Holder, the chief U.S. law enforcement officer, and his staff following recent disclosures that federal prosecutors seized records from two other media outlets without advance notice.

Vivendi agrees proposal for mediator in Canal+ spat

PARIS (Reuters) - French media group Vivendi on Friday backed a proposal to name a mediator in the legal spat with media group Lagardere over their Canal+ France pay-TV venture. "Vivendi confirms it has accepted the proposal from Commercial Court President Franck Gentin to open the way to a mediation in the lawsuit filed by Lagardere, demonstrating its goodwill and full confidence," a Vivendi spokesman told Reuters.

CBS acquires full ownership of TV Guide online and mobile units

(Reuters) - CBS Corp said on Friday it acquired full ownership of TV Guide's online and mobile apps divisions, buying out the 50 percent share held by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. CBS now owns TV Guide Digital, which includes the TVGuide.com website and TV Guide Mobile properties, the company said in a statement. CBS and Lions Gate share ownership of TV Guide's cable network, known as TVGN.
