イントロ
1955年2月9日横浜本牧生まれ。父はマカオ系ポルトガル人、母は日本人。幼稚園はサンクタ・マリア、小学から高校までセント・ジョセフ・カレッジに通った。カリフォルニア州サンディエゴのサンディエゴ大学に留学。南カリフォルニアで35年間を過ごし、2008年に横浜に戻り、現在も在住。
始まり
家族は大音楽好きで、父はポピュラー音楽やジャズのスタンダードを好んでいて、歌ったり、ウクレレを弾いたりするのが好きでした。母はポピュラー音楽とクラシック音楽を楽しんでました。姉と一緒に育った従兄弟は二人ともポップとロックが好きでした。
自分の一番古い音楽の思い出は家族の集まり（誕生日、結婚式、休日）で、皆がリビングに集まり、食事や飲み物を楽しみ、音楽を演奏したことです。当時は自分たちで楽しまなければなりませんでした。叔父のクリスはギター、ウクレレ、ラップスチールを弾き、戦後はバッキー白片やディック・ミネ等とセミプロとして演奏していました。もう一人の叔父は歌（特にスキャットが）が得意で、従兄弟は皆楽器を演奏しました。従兄弟のジョーは60年代に横浜ではかなり名の知れたギタリストになり、横浜、東京、埼玉の米軍基地を巡回して様々なバンドで活動しました。残念ながら、自動車事故で腕を骨折し、彼のキャリアは終わりを迎えてしまいました。噂によるとフェルナンデス・ギター社の名前はジョーから来てるとか。
Intro
Born 1955/2/9 in Honmoku, Yokohama. Father was Macaense (Portuguese from Macao). Mother was Japanese. Attended kindergarten at Sancta Maria; 1 through 12 at St. Joseph College. Attended University of San Diego in San Diego, California. Spent 35 years in Southern California until returning in 2008 to Yokohama where he now resides.
Beginnings
The family loved music - my father favored popular music and jazz standards. He liked to sing and played guitar, ukulele and piano. My mother enjoyed popular and classical music. My sister and my cousin who grew up with us both loved pop and rock’n’roll.
My earliest musical memories are family gatherings ( birthdays, weddings, holidays) where everyone would gather in the living room and eat, drink and play music. People had to entertain themselves back then. My uncle Chris played guitar, ukulele and lap steel, and played semi-professionally after the war with the likes of Bucky Shirakata and Dick Mine. My other uncle sang (scat being his forte) and all my cousins played instruments. My cousin Joe became quite a well-known guitarist in Yokohama in the 60’s and worked the US military base circuit in Yokohama, Tokyo and Saitama with various bands. Unfortunately, his career ended when he broke his arm in an automobile accident. Legend has it that the Fernandes guitar company got its name from Joe.
