I love my grandmother. I was her first grandchild, so she was a young grandmother. She was in her late 30’s when I was born.

She was a unique type of grandmother. She worked full-time all her life, so she wasn’t a stay-at-home homemaker type. She didn’t cook. Never. But she had a cookie jar that was always full of cookies (store bought), and we could eat as many as we wanted.

When I was a child, my sister and I often spent the night at my grandma’s house on the weekend. We’d have take-out for dinner, which was a great treat for us. One time, my grandmother bought the ingredients for banana splits, and that’s what we had for dinner. It was so fun! She reasoned that we were getting proper nutrition (栄養) from the banana splits. “There’s calcium in the ice cream. The bananas and canned cherries are fruit. And nuts are healthy!”

Her sofa could fold out into a bed, so that’s where my sister and I slept. My grandmother let us stay up watching TV until it went off the air.

Many years have passed since then.

I love you, Grandma Mary! ピンクハート

By the way, this is a banana split:
