One afternoon Ergo Phizmiz finds himself lumbered into delivering a parcel to the house of legendary alchemist and necromancer Dr Johann Faustus who, since the events of some time ago for which he is renowned, has entered into a rather quieter life in a vast, labyrinthine house, with hundreds of lodgers running the gamut from artists, birds, bird-people, walking fictions, ventriloquists, a Cassowary, running chairs, walking gramophones, and myriad automata.



This enormous dream fable, told through speech, songs, collage and sound-design, is the result of over three years delving down various rabbit-holes, and features collaborations in a range of contexts with artists of many disciplines, including Jack Phoenix, Margita Zalite, Pete Um, Angela Valid, Bela Emerson, Martha Moopette, Amie Willingale, and Zenith Pitts.



In glorious radiophonic technicolour, it is a musical-comedy of disorientation and magick, somewhere between nightmare and the half-remembered childhood whimsy of an insomniac music-hall artiste.



Please note - "The Faust Cycle" is not, necessarily, suitable for sensitive ears at times, containing, as it does, some naughty words, some sexy references, and a healthy smattering of scatological excess.

Test Dept

Test Dept was an industrial music band formed in New Cross, London, by unemployed musicians (including Alastair Adams, Paul Jamrozy, Angus Farquhar, Graham Cunnington, Tony Cudlip, Toby Burdon and Paul Hines) from Glasgow, Scotland, where the band later re-located. Comedian Vic Reeves played bass in an early incarnation of the band.

History



Formed in 1981, they are hailed by many musicians as one of the most influential early industrial music acts. Their approach was marked out by a strong commitment to radical socialist politics.



Their discography spans a wide variety of influences and styles, including a collaboration with the South Wales Striking Miners Choir in support of the Miners' Strike of 1984. They were particularly notable for complex and powerful percussion, as well as high-energy live performances. Like the German band Einstürzende Neubauten, with whom they are often compared, Test Dept used unconventional instruments such as scrap metal and industrial machinery as sound sources; however, Test Dept's use of these objects was far more rhythmic than was Neubauten's, and was often accompanied by film and slide shows. The band played concerts in a number of unusual site-specific locations, such as Waterloo, Cannon Street station, Stirling Castle and the defunct St Rollox Railway Works in Glasgow.



In later years the band's music became less industrial and took on many of the properties of techno. The band's political stance was energised by the passing of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.



The band split up in 1997, but its former members have continued to work in the fields of art and culture. For example, Angus Farquhar re-established the ancient Gaelic Beltane Fire Festival, held yearly on the night before/morning of the first of May on Edinburgh's Calton Hill. Farquhar also formed NVA, an innovative theatre company specialising in large-scale site-specific events. Cunnington, who suffers from chronic rheumatoid arthritis, produced a one-man show in 1996 called Pain, recounting his experiences as a sufferer from this condition.

Perhaps due to his reclusive nature or perhaps it was his iconoclastic vision, but Mickey Newbury slipped through the cracks. His peers--figures such as Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and Townes Van Zandt--have often celebrated his genius, but his own artistic output, some 15 albums in 30 years, remains little known. Frisco Mabel Joy, his 1971 debut for Elektra, is his masterpiece: an ambitious, orchestrated concept album, a commanding vision of the American soul. Rather than picking and choosing from his vast output, this tribute addresses Newbury's neglect by matching a mostly younger generation of singer-songwriters and alternative-country troubadours with that great Newbury album. Interpretations from the likes of Chuck Prophet, the Walkabouts, Dave Alvin, and Bob Neuwirth alternate between acoustic intimacy and lush soundscapes. Jazz guitarist Bill Frisell contributes atmospheric instrumental interludes between songs and helps bind the distinct voices into one elegiac whole. And though the song was absent from the original Frisco Mabel Joy, Kristofferson's gruff but perceptive version of "San Francisco Mabel Joy" closes this fascinating, loving, and successful homage. --Roy Kasten
