I started making machinima from the end of March last year. So I am making machinima for over 1 year. What I can expressed has also improvement,I think.
Of course, there are many that I am not able to still more.
"Subtitling" is one of them.
Rules of subtitling was worried about for a long time. I guessed I would be able to do once I learn by looking for the rule, but I can not handle all the work up there.
In fact, since the willing character edit function of Adobe Premiere Pro that I have used are not easy to use too much.
I can not handle all the work to that of the other when I care about position, size, and such as number of characters were.
But, I waw making previous machinima (http://urx.nu/amFR), and got the advice "subtitles voice of the radio is' good to be italic" from a friend.
And it made me to look for rules of subtitling with internet.
Following are rules of subtitling from English to Japanese, it was roughly like this. (I read some sites, but the site I reference on writing a blog → http://www.kandagaigo.ac.jp/jimaku/about_translation.html)
● 1 line up to 13 characters,in the horizontal subtitle until two lines
● put "-" at the end of the subtitle of the first one when the subtitle would be divided into two.
● Do not counted as one character " ! ?
● "-" is counted as one character
● Four characters in one second as display time of character.
It was written to be about 20 characters in 6 seconds in a book I bought before, but it is book of making home video, it is not the movie subtitles.
I make English subtitles of Japanese lines, because of it,everything is not all true for me.
But, if I know them in advance, It is very useful : )
マシニマを作り始めたのが去年の３月終わりくらい（だったと思います）。１年ちょっと経って、だいぶ勝手がわかってきました。表現出来ることも増えました。
もちろん、まだまだ出来てないこともたくさんあります。そのなかで、「出来る」けど「出来ない」こともあります。
やれば出来るんだけど、やることが多すぎてそこまでやってられないといったことです。
その中の１つに字幕制作があります。
以前から字幕制作のルールが気になっていました。調べて覚えてしまえば出来るんだろうけど、そこまで手が回らない。
実際、僕が使っているAdobe Premiere Proの文字編集機能はあまり使いやすいものではない気がするので、位置や大きさ、文字数とかを気にしているとそのほかのことまで手が回らないといった感じでした。
でも、前回のマシニマ（http://urx.nu/amFR）を作っているとき、字幕翻訳をお願いしていたお友達から「ラジオの音声の字幕は斜体にすると良いですよ」とアドバイスをもらったことがきっかけでやっと重い腰が上がりました＾＾；

●横字幕の文字数は１行は１３文字まで、行数は２行まで
●字幕が２つに分かれてしまう時は１つ目の字幕の最後に棒引き「ー」をつける。
●句読点は使わない。 「。」 は全角スペース 「、」 は半角スペースで表す。
●「？」 「！」 「”」 は１文字として数えない。
●「ー」と小さい文字「っ」「ュ」などは１文字として数える
また、文字の表示時間は１秒で４文字としているサイトが多かったです。僕が以前買った本には６秒で２０文字くらいと書いてありましたが、これは映画字幕ではなくてホームビデオ作製の本でした。
僕の動画は日本語のセリフを英語字幕にするので、文字数の数え方やその他のルールも全てがあてはまるわけではないですが、とても参考になりました。
あらかじめ、知識として知っているのと知らないのでは変わってくるように思います ＾＾
