英会話で一番厳しいシチュエーション

こんにちは

2023年１月から

家族（ﾊﾞﾘｷｬﾘ妻と３歳娘）で

シンガポールに移住しました

ローです。

先日、妻の上司家族（インド人）にお呼ばれされて

イーストコーストの高級コンドに行ってきました。

大人は１０人くらいでインド人とシンガポール人

6歳と8歳の女のコ（インド人の娘）

いやー

キツかった～

子供は別部屋で遊んでたんだけど

何がキツイって

10人位でみんなで英語話して

しかも、会社の仲間だから

話しが仕事の話になるし

バックミュージック大きいし

30分でギブアップ

正直よく30分頑張ったなって感じ

個別に分かれて話しするならいいんだけど

和になって話してる感じだったので

そこで発言するのキツイです。

その後は

子供達とモノポリーやってました(笑)

英語勉強中の身としては

今までで一番厳しい環境だった

その中でもシンガポール人の英語は本当に聞きにくい

というよりなに言ってるかさっぱり分からなかったです(笑)

でも、今後の勉強の励みになるような経験でした。

半年後にはこのシチュエーションでもやっていける英語力をつけよう！

とポジティブに取れてます

The other day, my wife and I were invited to her Indian boss's family gathering at a high-end condo on the East Coast.

There were about 10 adults, including Indians and Singaporeans, and two girls aged 6 and 8 (the boss's daughters).

It was tough, really tough. The kids were playing in a separate room, but the difficult part was that everyone was speaking English, and since they were all colleagues, the conversation was mostly work-related. I gave up after 30 minutes. Honestly, I was surprised I lasted that long. It would have been better if we could have broken up into smaller groups to chat, but it was more of a communal setting, so it was tough to interject.

Afterwards, we played Monopoly with the kids (laughs).

As someone who is studying English, it was the toughest environment I've been in so far. The Singaporean English was particularly hard to understand, or rather, I couldn't understand anything (laughs). But it was an experience that will motivate me to study harder in the future.

海外移住2ヶ月経過（3歳娘の様子）

こんにちは

2023年１月から

家族（ﾊﾞﾘｷｬﾘ妻と３歳娘）で

シンガポール移住しました

ローです。

初の海外移住から

丸2ヶ月経ちました。

率直な、感想

人間って2ヶ月で

こんなに慣れるんだ！

と思いました。

娘はすっかり

シンガポールのローカル

プリスクールが

気に入ってるようで、

週末になると

「保育園行きたーいと」

言う始末(笑)

食事もヌードルを中心に

シンガポールの食事を

食べてます。

流石に辛い料理は食べれないのですが、

中華料理が多いので、

チャーハンなども

好きみたいです。

あと、

プールが年中入れるので

2ヶ月でだいぶ上達して

腕に浮き輪つけてバタ足してます。

シンガポールで育った子供は

生後6ヶ月位から

プール入ってるので

３歳だと泳げるのが普通だとか。

徐々にやっていきます。

英語はhereとかthis one

など簡単な単語を発して

短い文は私が言った後

マネすることもあります。

そして、

超が着くくらい社交的な３歳児は近所の子供に

ドンドン話しかけて遊んでます。

2ヶ月でこんなに馴染むとは

想像以上です。

From my first experience living overseas,

It has been exactly two months now.

To be honest, I never imagined

how quickly humans can adapt

to a new environment in just two months!

My daughter has fully embraced

the local Singaporean lifestyle,

and she loves going to preschool

during the week and even begs to go

on weekends saying, "I want to go to nursery!"

She enjoys eating Singaporean food,

especially noodles, and while she can't handle spicy dishes,

she loves Chinese cuisine and dishes like fried rice.

Also, since she can swim in the pool all year round here in Singapore,

she has improved significantly in just two months,

wearing water wings and practicing kicking her legs.

Children in Singapore start swimming from around six months old,

so it's common for three-year-olds to be able to swim.

She's gradually learning English too,

repeating simple words like "here" and "this one"

after I say them, and trying to form short sentences.

And, as an incredibly social three-year-old,

she's already making friends with the neighborhood kids,

talking and playing with them with enthusiasm.

I never expected to feel this settled in just two months.

インドの新車は○○がないニューデリ編

主夫のローです。

週末にインド人夫婦のお宅にお邪魔するので

私のインド体験③を書こうと思います。

20年前に友人のトモと二人でニューデリーに行きました。

インドは人が物凄い数いるので、基本騒がしくて、汚いし、車の運転も粗い。

因みに、インドの新車は再度ミラーがない。

なぜなら、ぶつかって壊れるから、はじめから付けない。後ろを確認するにはルームミラーから見る。

（20年前の話だけど今はつけないとイケないようです）

India is known for its huge population, which means that it is generally noisy and dirty, and driving can be rough.

By the way, new cars in India don't have rearview mirrors again.

This is because they don't install them in the first place, since they tend to get broken in accidents. Instead, drivers rely on the rearview mirror inside the car to see what's behind them.

(This was the case 20 years ago, but it seems that it's now required to have them.)

インドと言えばタージマハルが有名ですね。

に似てますが、モデルではないようです

個人的にはこの塔が一番好き

 

インドは行ったときは大変で二度と行きたくないと思いますが、後からなんとも恋しくなる場所です。

【続】ガンジス川でバタフライ② インドの天才少年現る

週末にインド人夫婦のお宅にお邪魔するので

私のインド体験②を書こうと思います。

20年前に友人のトモと二人でニューデリーから夜行列車でバラナシに行きました。

（820km14時間）

バラナシに行く人は少ないと思いますが、

日の出ボートツアーは絶対に外せないです。

まず、ガンジス川はとてつもなく広いです。

まるで海のようですが、

波がないので静かで霧がかってとても神秘的でした。

しかも、淡水イルカが顔を出してくれて感動しました。

I don't think many people go to Varanasi, but the sunrise boat tour is an absolute must-do.

First of all, the Ganges River is incredibly vast. It's like the sea, but without waves, so it's quiet and shrouded in fog, making it very mystical. And to top it off, we were thrilled to see the freshwater dolphins popping up to say hello.

そして、「ガンジス川でバタフライ」

（長澤まさみの映画です）をして沐浴で身を清めた後に

ニューデリーに帰るためにバラナシ駅電車を待ってました。

待てど暮らせど全然電車来ない。

私はチェスが趣味なので

友達のトモと二人でホームでやってました。

すると凄い数の人が集まってくる

インドあるあるですが、すぐに人が集まる。

ちょっと道を聞いただけで、まるで芸能人のようです(笑)

I've been waiting forever for the train to come, but it's still not here. Chess is my hobby, so I was playing it with my friend Tomo on the platform. Then, a huge crowd started to gather. It's a common thing in India for people to gather quickly. Just by asking for

directions, it feels like you're a celebrity (laughs).

野次馬の中にひときわ若い男が

「あーでもね、こーでもねー」と言ってくるので、

一局対戦することになりました。

聞くと１４歳で勉強合宿で来ていて二人の家庭教師！を引き連れてました！

どんな「ボンボン」かと思ったけど、チェス始めるとすぐに、彼が天才だと分かりました。

打つ手打つ手がクリエイティブでアグレッシブ。

めちゃくちゃいい手をバシバシ

しかし私も基礎からしっかりチェスを勉強をしていて、

自称日本人最強！

（日本人とほとんどやったことがないので日本人に負けたことがない）

勝負は相手がアグレッシブすぎて若さゆえの凡ミスをしてくれたので2勝1敗で私の勝ちでしたが、

正直、彼の方が全然強かったです。

結局、4時間後に電車は来ました( ´∀｀ )

でも、インドの天才君に会えて楽しかった。

A young man stood out from the crowd of onlookers and said, "This move or that move, I'm not sure." So, we ended up playing a game of chess together.

When I asked, he told me he was 14 years old and had come to a study camp with two private tutors! I thought he must be some kind of elite student, but as soon as we started playing chess, I realized he was a genius. His moves were creative and aggressive. However, I had also been obsessed with chess since high school and had studied the basics thoroughly, so I called myself the strongest Japanese player (I had hardly played against Japanese people, so I had never lost to one).

In the end, I won 2-1 because my opponent was too aggressive and made some mistakes due to his youth, but honestly, he was much stronger than me. We played three games of chess, and the train came four hours later.

But it was fun to meet this genius from India.

週末にインド人夫婦のお宅にお邪魔するので

私のインド体験を書こうと思います。

20年前に1週間ほど友人のトモと二人でニューデリーとバラナシに行きました。

兄が海外赴任でニューデリーに4年くらい住んでいたので

遊びに行きました。

タージマハルはご存じの通り素晴らしい建築ですが

やはりバラナシです！

ガンジス川で沐浴している写真を見たことある人も多いと思います。

バラナシは、ヒンズー教徒にとって最も聖なる場所の1つです。

多くのヒンズー教徒にとっては、肉体的な苦痛や悪行を浄化し、生まれ変わりを促す場所として崇められています。

私のインド体験をインド人に話したいです。

１　ガンジス川のほとりでキャンプファイヤーのように

火が24時間年中無休で燃え続けていたのですが、そこでは死者を火葬しています。

On the banks of the River Ganges, there burns a perpetual flame, much like a campfire, that has been lit for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In that place, the dead are cremated.

ヒンズー教徒が死んだら布にくるんで、神輿のようなもので担いで、街を歩きそこで燃やされる。

When a Hindu dies, their body is wrapped in a cloth and carried on a litter-like structure through the streets to the cremation site, where it is burned.

ヒンズー教徒にとってバラナシで火葬されることは最高の行いである。

なので死期が近くなると、遠くから歩いて来て、天寿を全うして火葬される。

When the end of life approaches, one walks from afar and fulfills their natural lifespan before being cremated.

そんな話を聞いた後に私は道ですごいものを見ました

After hearing that story, I saw something amazing on the road

真っ黒な人型の物体が横たわっていた。

There was a pitch-black humanoid object lying down

横を通り抜けたときにそれが何か分かりました。

I realized what it was as I passed by it sideways

人間に無数のハエがたかっていたのです！！

There were countless flies swarming around the human body

信じられなかったけど、本当です。

I couldn't believe it, but it's true

火葬の話にもどります。

妊婦・子供・殺人犯は火葬されない。布にくるんで重しをつけてガンジス川に沈められる。

ガンジス川には淡水イルカがいるのですが、淡水イルカの餌になるとか

Pregnant women, children, and murderers are not cremated but instead wrapped in cloth with weights attached and sunk in the Ganges River. The Ganges River is home to freshwater dolphins, which may feed on them as prey

週末インド人に直接聞いてみたいと思います。

因みに当時のバラナシは街灯が少なくて夜歩くとかなり怖かったです。
