One day in September, when it was still hot
even for “hitoe (unlined summer kimono)”,
I visited a tea gathering to celebrate the 70
years old of a tea master who has lived in
Australia for 45 years.
It was an international tea gathering hosted
by the tea master’s disiples. The flowers were
somewhat wild, and the tea utensils came out
of a box that looked like a “tabidansu
(a portable chest of drawers that stores the
utensils necessary for the tea ceremony)” and
the tea procedure started.
Handmade sweets appeared from the drawer.
The sweets consisted of two types of
mashmallows, sesame and citrus, as well as
dried starfruit.
It was an elaborate and enjoyable tea gathering.
The 96 year-old Daisosho (former Urasenke
Grand Master) of the tea ceremony also
appeared and seemed to enjoy conversation in
fluent English. He was in good health, and we’ve
been cheered up.
単衣でも、まだまだ暑い9月のある日、在豪45年
という茶道の先生の七十歳のお祝い茶会にお邪魔
した。先生とゆかりのある茶人がお席を持つ
インターナショナルな茶会。
茶花もどことなく野性的で、旅箪笥に似た箱から
出てきたお道具で、茶箱の月点前が始まり
引出しからは、手作りお菓子がお目見えした。
胡麻と柑橘系の2種のマシュマロに
スターフルーツのドライフルーツ。工夫を凝らした
楽しい趣向のお茶席だった。
御年96歳の大宗匠もお出ましになり、流暢な英語で
会話を楽しまれていたご様子。ご壮健でこちらが
元気をいただいた。
