When it finally became hot and humid,
I had a bowl of matcha in a tea room
which provided a cool atmosphere.
The room was decorated with a hanging
scroll of “Take (Bamboo)”, and I enjoyed
two bowls of matcha with a wagashi
“fu-manju (round wheat gluten cake filled
with a sweet red bean jam)” whilst feeling
natural wind in the tea room.
The evergreen straight bamboo is one of
the plants that symbolises good fortune
and is also used for New Year’s decoration.
“Taketori monogatari (the tale of bamboo
cutter)” is said to be the oldest Japanese
story whose author was unknown in the
Heian period (794-1185).
The story is about a 3-sun (9cm) small
Kaguya-hime (Princess Kaguya) who was
found in the bamboo by Taketori-no-Okina
and grew up to be a beautiful woman in 3
months. She rejects the marriage proposal
of 5 noblemen and the Emperor and returns
to the moon on the full-moon night in August.
The immortal (“fuji” in Japanese) medicine
left by Kaguya-hime was burned in the
mountain nearest to heaven, because it could
not be helped to become immortal without
Kaguya-hime. Since then, the mountain has
been called “Fuji”.
ようやく蒸し暑くなってきた梅雨晴れ
の日は、涼しく演出された茶室で一服。
「竹」の掛け軸が飾られ、茶室の中で
自然の風を感じながら、涼しげな
麩まんじゅうで美味しく二服いただいた。
常緑で真っ直ぐ伸びる竹は、吉祥を象徴
する植物のひとつとされ、お正月の門松
にも使われている。
竹取物語は、平安時代の作者不詳の日本
最古の物語といわれている。竹取の翁に
竹の中から見つけだされた3寸の小さい
かぐや姫が、３ヵ月で美しい女性に育ち
5人の貴公子や帝の求婚を退け、八月
十五夜に月の世界へ帰る。
かぐや姫が残した不死の薬は、かぐや姫が
いないのに不死となっても仕方がないと
一番天に近い山で燃やされた。それ以来
その山は「富士」と呼ばれるようになった。
