ARGYLE After spending most of his Saturday afternoon chasing Logan Green around the football field, Potosi's Bryce McMahon finally got to Pecatonica/Argyle's sophomore quarterback in time to put his Chieftains atop the Six Rivers Conference.
His sack on fourth and 13 with a little more than 2 minutes left killed the Vikings' final drive and preserved a 26 20 Steve Atwater Jersey victory for the Chieftains, who emerged from another wild and wacky week in the Six Rivers alone in first place by one game over three teams.
Pecatonica/Argyle was one of them, after its final drive stalled at the Potosi 23 yard line and died altogether after McMahon's sack.
"I'd been running their quarterback all around," McMahon said. "I just knew I had one more chance and I'd get him. That was my last chance, I came up and I got him."
The sack not only bagged a critical win for the Shannon Sharpe Jersey Chieftains the 100th in coach Mark Siegert's 16 seasons at Potosi but it left them with complete control of their destiny in the Six Rivers race. They will finish the regular season Friday at Belmont, another team one game back in the standings.
It also came one play after Green found halfback Cam Treuthardt in triple coverage in the end zone only to watch his pass glance off of Treuthardt's shoulder pads.
"I saw it," Treuthardt said. "That pass was my bad. There was a defender right behind me. We were fighting a little bit, like every pass. That was a good ball, one I should have had. That was my mistake."
Like it or not, though, this was Terrell Davis Broncos Jersey a game in which every mistake was magnified.
Defensive breakdowns from Pec/Argyle on Potosi's opening possession resulted in a two play, 52 yard drive and a 6 0 lead. An ill advised throw by Chieftains quarterback tied the game 6 6 a few minutes later when Riley Ostby jumped his pass and returned it 25 yards to the end zone for a pick six.
And so it continued. Potosi couldn't contain Treuthardt on back to back plays late in the second quarter he ran under a Green pass for a 37 yard gain on third and 8 to the Chieftains' 14, where he twisted and turned his way to a touchdown and a 14 6 lead.
Potosi couldn't be stopped on its first drive of the second half. The Chieftains went 71 yards in 10 plays and cut Pec/Argyle's lead to 14 12 on Brent Curtis' 7 yard run.
Fast forward to the fourth quarter when the teams traded TD. Potosi went up 20 14 on Riley Hawes' 68 yard catch and run before Pec/Argyle tied it with 9:41 to play when Authentic Steve Atwater Jersey Green found Ostby on a 5 yard TD floater.
And then the two teams traded three and outs. Pec/Argyle's proved crippling after punter Brooks Chandler's bid to keep the ball out of Hawkes' hands resulted in him popping his punt straight up in the air and down to the turf where it rolled backward to the Vikings' 24 for a minus Authentic Shannon Sharpe Jersey 4 yard punt.
Curtis scored again five plays later on a 5 yard run with 5 1/2 minutes to go. Potosi's conversion pass missed the mark, leaving it a 26 20 game, but the Vikings couldn't capitalize on their final possession.
"We knew it would be a tough ballgame coming in here," Vikings coach Larry Green Said. "Our kids were prepared for that. They made a few more plays than we did. Up front, they were a little more physical than we were. At times, that put pressure on us and we thought that we'd be able to get open, but it didn't work that way.".
