高円宮杯第６０回全日本中学校英語弁論大会県予選会（読売新聞、新潟県中学校教育研究会主権）新潟市中央区
新潟市万代市民会館で１０月１０日(金）行われました。 県内から２６校が出場し、最近の出来事、環境問題、歴史、
クラブ活動、家族、尊敬する人などについて、考えたこと、思ったことを身振り、手振りを交え、声のトーンをつけて５分以内のスピーチを競い合いました。 私の教え子も参加しました。第６０回ということですが、今年初めて中学生の英語のスピーチ身近で聞くことができたのですが、正直、レベルの高さに驚きました。皆さんとても上手で内容も面白いのもたくさんあり、また堂々と観客の前でほとんど暗記でスピーチする姿はとてもすばらしかったです。
教え子も、とても緊張したと思いますが、堂々と間違わずにスピーチをすることができました。 残念ながら、ぎりぎり受賞を逃しましたが、私の中ではベストと尽くした彼女が一番だと思っています。しかもスピーチを全部暗記してのぞみました。少し彼女のスピーチを載せたいと思います。
The Dinner We Have Today Won't be The Same Tomorrow
Do you remember what you had for dinner last night? I had a bowl of rice, a piece of steak, and some potato salad. If food imports stop, our homes will be unable to store enough food. That means we won't have steak or potato salad for dinner. The Japanese food self-suffiency rate has fallen below 40%.
Japan's food shortage lies in the world population growth, farm crop decline due to land development and irregular weather, and the demand of biofuels.
Japan depends too much on imports from many countries for food. Did you know that most of the shrimp caught in the Philippines are exported to Japan? While most Japanese consumers enjoy eating this delicious delicacy, the Philippine people don't have a chance to taste it. In Japan, you can get anything you want all year around. But is it alright to be like this?
Japan used to have a higher food self sufficiency in the past, but after World War II, the eating habits of Japan changed to an American - European style. These changes have lowered the nation's food self-sufficiency. Instead of rice, Japanese people started to eat more red meat. In addition, we depend more on fast-food restaurants and convenience stores. We have totally changed our eating habits.....

今、大変にアメリカの選挙が盛り上がっています。
さて、今回のアメリカの選挙を占拠するのは果たして誰か？
私は、I go for Obamaさんです。'We can change!!!'彼の言葉にアメリカのいい未来が見えます。でも、白人パワーが強いアメリカは果たして、初黒人の大統領を許すことができるかが疑問です。共和党のマッケインさんも強敵です。
そうそう、オバマさんのミドルネームがHusseinだって知ってましたか。 びっくりです。だけど、だけど、そんなの関係ないです。外形はともかく中身が大事です！！！！オバマさんがんばって！！！福井県の小浜市も応援しているぞ！！！
ところで、高校生の生徒さんからWhat's Super Tuesday? という質問がありました。
Super Tuesday, refers to Tuesday in February or March of a presidential election year, when the greatest number of states hold primary elections to select delegates to national conventions at which each party's presidential candidates are officially nominated.
More delegates can be won on Super Tuesday on any single day of the primary calendar candidates seeking the presidency traditionally must do well on this day to secure their party's nomination.

その日は多くの州で同時に予備選挙が集中し、一日で最大の代議員を取得することができる日です。
この日を｢大統領候補者選びの天王山」ともいわれています。

先週、生徒さんからこんな質問がありました。｢先生、Super Ballって何？」 Super Ball? ....
あっ！！Super Bowlね！！！
アメリカのプロフットボール世界ではSuper Bowlは（ＮＦＬ）リーグのNo.1チーム を決める大事な決勝戦のことです。
このスーパーボウルは約40年の歴史があり、アメリカ国民が一番よく見るスポーツイベントで、その日の食事の消費量は一年の中でもっとも多く、視聴率もダントツ１位。その経済効果は計りしれないといわれているぐらいの大大大イベントです。実際私がアメリカの大学で学んでたころ、Super Bowlの日キャンパスがガラーンとしているのに驚きました。あれだけの数の生徒さんが歩き回っているキャンパスにポツポツとしか人が歩いておらず、それに比べて、町中のスポーツバー、レストラン、そして寮の中、テレビがある部屋は人人で溢れかえり、大変な騒ぎでした。
Super Bowlの試合中に流れるテレビCMの契約金は億の桁がつくといわれています。
試合前、またはhalf timeでは世界的有名なミュージシャンがパフォームします。そういえば、何年か前にJanet Jackson のポロリ事件がありましたよね。
スーパーボウルで優勝したチームにはVinee Lombardi Trophy と呼ばれるトロフィーが与えられます。1967年前までは、'World Championship Game Trophy'と呼ばれていたが、1970年にGreen Bay Packersの名コーチ、Vince Lombardi, 第１回、２回のスーパーボウルを連勝しての名を冠されて、Vinee Lombardi Trophyと呼ばれようになりました。
また、優勝したチームのメンバーにはスーパーボウルリングという指輪が与えられ、このリングを持つことがＮＦＬ選手にとってもっとも名誉のことです。
Super Bowlの後に続くローマ数字は年代を表すものではなく、Super Bowlが行われた回数を表しているようです。

The Super Bowl uses Roman numbers to identify each game, rather than the year it was held since the NFL season extends beyond New Year's Eve.
