LIJIANG — Even the most frustrating travel experience can be completely redeemed by the power of world-class art.

Recently, Vietnamese filmmaker and artist Thành Nguyễn shared a stunning photo of a multi-tiered, red-clay stage filled with performers in traditional ethnic costumes. In his post, he candidly admitted that while he had previously criticized his tour's poorly planned itinerary, the spectacular cultural shows in Lijiang, China, ultimately "saved his soul."

The Magic of Zhang Yimou’s Impression Lijiang

The main highlight of his journey was Impression Lijiang (Ấn tượng Lệ Giang), a massive outdoor production directed by the legendary filmmaker Zhang Yimou.

Set against the majestic backdrop of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the show is celebrated for its unique elements:

  • Local Authenticity: The cast features over 500 local villagers and farmers from various ethnic minorities, rather than professional dancers.

  • Immersive Design: A circular, multi-level red stage allows actors to emerge from unexpected angles, paired with a custom surround-sound system that creates an incredibly visceral experience.

  • Pure Culture Over Plot: Rather than a traditional storyline, the performance focuses on showcasing local customs, rituals, and horse-trading history. Thành even noted a traditional drinking game in the show that warmly reminded him of the customs of the Tày ethnic minority in Vietnam.

High-Tech Wonder: Lijiang Eternal Love

Beyond the open-air grandeur of Impression Lijiang, the traveler was equally captivated by Lijiang Eternal Love (Lệ Giang Thiên cổ tình). This indoor theatrical marvel is highly regarded for its massive scale, breathtaking choreography, and state-of-the-art stage technology that brings regional folklore to life in spectacular fashion.

Art as the Ultimate Bridge

Thành Nguyễn’s viral post serves as a beautiful reminder of how cultural performances can transcend borders. Despite his initial travel hiccups, the sheer scale, artistry, and passion of Lijiang's local performers left an indelible mark, proving that great art has the power to turn any journey into a masterpiece.
