Long before I became an agent, I cried “uncle” when it came to the rules of a good book proposal. First, let me say BONE is a book about courage, conviction, and loyalty. I've heard of the author, mostly because of The Sweet Hereafter, but have never heard of Rule of the Bone, which is a bit of a shame, since being about a teenager growing up during the 1990's, it would've been in my wheelhouse. Blood and Bone is the fifth novel in the Malazan Empire series written by Ian C. For every carved-in-stone rule you'll find, you'll find an agent or an editor who'll contradict that rule. Esslemont, but also the fifteenth in the Malazan universe, though I personally don't know how integrated the two series are with one another; something to look into elsewhere. The setting is a medieval town and the tavern is a realistic meeting place for the locals.
