It’s mid-March, and yes, we can still see remnants of Mardi Gras all around. But don’t let the beads and trinkets hanging from the oaks on St. Charles Avenue give you pause. It’s time to start thinking about spring! I won’t deny the slight chill in the air, but it won’t be here for long. Fair weather and longer days are ahead and among the many delightful seasonal gifts. And perhaps the most entertaining of all of spring’s offerings is the fashion. Bright colors and glamourous silhouettes are popping up in sun-drenched windows at boutiques across the city. Most shops have already received their full offering of spring styles. So, this is the time to grab the greatest hits in your size before it’s too late!

There are a few standout trends that I’m particularly excited about this season. The new, updated take on crochet garments at brands like Sea, Chloe, Missoni, Veronica Beard and Jacquemus are a reminder that what was old can always become new again. Crochet has been around for centuries as a homemaker’s tool and a way to gift a friend or outfit your children. Today it captures the same homemade sentiment, likely conjured up during quarantine crafting sessions.

Another trend still holding strong for spring is the asymmetric style cut out tops and dresses. Countless iterations of this trend now make it easy to find a “cut out” piece that won’t draw attention to the wrong area. Lastly, the brightly colored, playfully patterned pants for spring feel like a step into Alice’s “Wonderland” – full of unexpected color pops and curious shapes.

They feel optimistic and whimsical, just as you’d hope to see in a spring season blossoming out of the weeds of a pretty rough couple of years.
