京都の青蓮院を、通訳ガイド風に説明します！

青蓮院は、京都市東山区にある天台宗の仏教寺院です。
900年前、平安時代末期に開かれました。
門跡寺院という、皇室ゆかりの格式の高いお寺です。

私の大好きなお寺のひとつですが、その理由が3つあります。
１）京都の観光パンフレットにも写真が使われたことのある、美しい日本庭園があります。
２）伝統的な日本家屋の建築を、見るだけでなく、中に入ることもできます。
３）穏やかで静かな、本来の京都らしい空間を楽しむことができます。

門跡寺院は、皇室関係の子弟が入寺するお寺です。
これまで多くの皇室出身者が住職を務めてきました。

結果的に天皇の子どもが増え、
皇位継承をめぐって命を狙われることになってしまったため、
野心がないことを示すために仏門に入る、ということが行われたのでした。

日本には仏教の寺が約7万8000寺あると言われていますが、
現存する門跡寺院は約30寺程度です。
中でも青蓮院は天台宗3門跡の一つで、
上皇の仮御所となったこともある、大変格式の高い、由緒正しいお寺です。
日本の雅な雰囲気とはこういうものだということを
是非とも知っていただきたいと思います。
