In 1989 the 765-ha (1900-acre) tract of forest and foreshore was dedicated as parkland. Today, an extensive trail system explores the different ecological areas of coniferous forest and alder woods, beach and bog. Each form of life establishes itself in its own preferred environment, so that a walk in the park can be a fascinating study. Originally typical coastal evergreen forest, the region now comprises several different types of habitat, as the effects of logging are played out. Where the land was totally cleared of trees and stumps, alder and birch woods have grown up, with a shrub layer of salmonberry, elderberry and, in drier spots, Oregon grape and salal. Where logging was more selective, the forest grew back more naturally, with deciduous trees such as cottonwoods, broadleaf and vine maples establishing themselves. As these trees provided shade, young conifers were able to get a start, and the next stage in the return to evergreen rainforest was begun. On the east side of the park, a small area of peat bog remains-a relic of glacial activity some 12,000 years ago. Restoration work is currently being done in Camosun Bog to preserve the bog's unique plant life and to save it from the shrinkage begun when adjacent land was drained for development. The signposted, all-weather route chosen for this short circuit will serve as an introduction to Pacific Spirit's network of trails.
