This time, I would like to introduce:

In the commentary notes,
Jun Atsugi clearly describes Arley as
a female writer who depicts evil women
and perfect crimes.
That part is something
I strongly recommend you read for yourself.
The Straw Woman was first published in France in 1956.
It reached Japan about ten years later, in the 1960s.
Today, the premise may not seem unusual,
but at the time,
it must have been shocking in the world of detective fiction—
especially because it was written by a woman.
This was my first time reading
a work by Catherine Arley.
The final actions of the protagonist,
and the way they are described,
are sensual, cold,
and intensely haunting.
Whether one accepts or rejects that ending
is entirely up to the reader.
The Straw Woman was also adapted into a film
by United Artists.
It starred
Sean Connery
and Gina Lollobrigida.
Both the front and back covers of the book
