Lil Silva/ Club Constructions Volume 2 (Night Slugs)
LIL SILVA returns to Night Slugs to drop the second installment in our new Club Constructions series. CC is all about stripped-back, raw and highly functional tracks made specifically for the club. Where L-Vis 1990's first venture into the series presented a brutalist vision of House, Silva's Volume 2 represents the vital flip side to the concept: broken, grimey rhythm tracks. Since his last excursion with Slugs back in 2010, Lil Silva has been reconnecting with his Grime roots. The remnants of golden-era Macabre Unit were always audible in his wild flangers, detailed hi hats and propulsive sub-basses and on "Club Constructions Volume 2" he runs with this heritage, combining it with his pedigree in UK Funky and a new half-time approach first explored on last year's single "Cheese & Bun". This is a return to the kind of inventive rhythm programming that generates immediate energy. Here we present "Shutter" - the late-2010 dubplate that's been doing the rounds in our crew for a minute - alongside two brand new bass-driven club tracks. All three are heavy but restrained, built simply to devastate soundsystems without ever losing their cool.

Skudge/ Convolution/ Contamination (Skudge Records)
Not much is yet known about the Skudge label, but that'll probably end soon. The young Swedish imprint's debut 12-inch ticks all the right boxes: Dance floor-friendly, just weird enough to stand out and an anonymous producer at the helm. What's not to like? Especially considering the music: "Convolution" somehow effortlessly merges dub techno and loopy Mannheim house into a coherent package, dropping a repeated vocal sample directly into an upbeat cloud of smoky 4/4 beats."Contamination" isn't quite a crossover gem like the flip. The way it reworks dub techno fundamentals, however, is equally as engaging. Jettisoning the vocal sample for a melody that seems to be built from someone quickly waving their hand in front of an air vent, there's no lack of fascinating sounds on offer. There's a bit less grooviness. "Contamination"'s raw beat hits and hits again with little variation. Criticizing its lack of swing, though, only serves to highlight the quality on hand. Skudge is clearly a label to keep an eye on.
