Burrhus Federic Skinner was born in 1904 in Susquehouna, Pennsylvania, where he was raised in a warm, satable family environment. His father was a lawyer, his mother, according to Skinner's descrption, was "bright and beautiful",with rigid, unchanging standards of what was "right," While growing up, Skinner was an avid buider of things-scooters, wagons sleds, rafts, seesaws, slingshots, blowguns, model airplanees, and so on. He even tried to build a glider in which to fly and worked unsuccessfully on a perpetual-motion machine.

After graduating from a small hight school that he claims he liked, Skinner went on to Hamilton Coleege, a samall liberal arts school in New York State. There he majored in English and served as a tutor in a family from whom he acquired a hightened apprecation of music, art, writing, and the "art of living." He also became involved in various troublemaking activities:he helped perperate a hoax involving a scheduled visit to the college by Chalie Chaplin, the famous movie actor and comedian. A large crowd gatherred in vain; he attacked Phi Beta Kappa in a student publication;and he and a group of other students created such a disturbance at commencement exercises that they were reprimanded by the college president.

After college he attempted to make his mark as a writer. During the next two years he became discouraged with writing, and discovered that he was interested in psychology, partly because of reading about early behaviorristic ideas. He lived in Greemwich Village for several monthes, and spent a summer in Europe. In the fall of 1928, Skinner entered Harvard University and began studing psychology.φ(.. )
