サンフランシスコ2015年夏前半 [San Francisco Week 1]

今年の夏の家族旅行はサンフランシスコでした。
またまた車で大陸半分を横断していったのですが、
いつもなら途中一泊二泊して国立公園にでも寄るところ、
行きは荷物が届くまで出かけられず、
帰りも荷物を早く解きたくて
それぞれ３日間ぶっ通しで運転していったのは辛かった...
でも喉元すぎればで、
写真を整理すると楽しい思い出しか残っていないのが幸せです。

We spent our family vacation this past summer in San Francisco. We drove, but unlike our typical trips where we stop to see somewhere on the way, we drove through 3 days straight on our way out and back, which was rough. Thankfully, when I go through these pictures, only happy memories are left.

サンフランシスコの１週目はコンドを借り、
お兄ちゃんたちはデイキャンプに通い、
カイカイは義姉さんにお願いして、パパと二人で学会に出席しました。
学会後の午後は親子三人水入らずで
バスを乗り継いでゴールデン・ゲート公園へ散策。

During our first week, we rented a condo, from where the boys went to a week-long day camp and Daddy and I attended a conference, while Kaikai was under her aunt's care. After our conference, we took a few outings with Kaia. These pictures are from the Golden Gate Park.

別の日には義姉さんもいっしょに四人で散策し、

最後はジラルデリのお店でサンデーをみんなで分けて食べました。

ending up at Ghirardelli's to enjoy an enormous sundae together.

お兄ちゃんたちはそれぞれのキャンプを存分に楽しんだようです。
ソウ兄が選んだのは海の生き物がテーマ。
木曜日にはクジラ観察のクルーズにも連れていってもらったのですが
残念ながら会えなかったとか。

The boys had so much fun at their camps. Jiro chose the one about sea animals, which included a whale watching cruise. He sure was excited even though they didn't get to see one.

エイ兄が選んだのはミシンを使うファッションがテーマ。
最終日のファッション・ショーでは
縫製した半ズボンとショルダーバッグを披露。
なかなか上手でびっくりしました。
ここでも男子一人の環境でしたが
まるで気にすることもなく楽しめていたのはいいこと。
あれも作る、これも作る、と作品案がいっぱい。
がんばってくれたまえ。

Taro picked a fashion-themed program, where he learned how to use a sewing machine. On the last day, they had a show, displaying their creations: shorts and shoulder bag for Taro. He has so many project ideas using my sewing machine!

夕方にはお兄ちゃんたちもいっしょに散策。
一日はゴールデン・ゲート・ブリッジへ。
カイカイは強風がお気に入りで
笑顔が絶えませんでした。

On couple of evenings, we ventured out, one time to the Golden Gate Bridge. Kaikai loved the wind and could not stop grinning.

渡り始めたはいいけれど
横の金網がなくなっていることに気づくと足がすくんでしまい、
この写真をとってUターン。

The wind brought about my phobia for heights, which made me take this picture on the bridge and head back...

別の日には太平洋に面したランズ・エンドへ。
海風になびかれた木々が印象的でした。

On a different evening, we hiked the Lands End National Recreation Area.

週の終わりはパパが義姉さんを空港に送っていく間
ソウ兄とカイカイとプレシディオの海岸で少し過ごしました。
ソウ兄が遊んでいるところはワンちゃんたちの遊び場でもあるようで
笑える写真が数枚撮れました。
カイカイもお砂が大好き！

At the end of our first week, Jiro, Kaikai, and I spent some time on the beach in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, while Daddy brought his sister to the airport. I got some fun pictures of Jiro playing with the sand, along with dogs who were excited to be near the water as well. Later that day, we were reunited with our old-time friends for the second half of our vacation.

この午後旧友との再会が待っていました。

ミネソタ・ステート・フェア

これも夏休みの記録です。
引っ越し先の夏の風物詩は
8月末から9月初めにかけての
ミネソタ・ステート・フェア。
要は州レベルの農産物品評会なのですが、
ミネソタのは全米でも有名なくらい盛大なフェアとされています。
フェア開催期間中最初の土曜日に自転車で出かけました。

We checked out the Minnesota State Fair, which is held in our new neighborhood from the end of August through Labor Day. So nice we could bike to the Fairgrounds, and we also discovered that my office window framed the nightly fireworks perfectly. The downside was the need to avoid nearby streets during the Fair.

昔を思い出すのでしょう。
乳牛の品評会を見ながらパパが説明してくれています。
（北海道のaoiくん宅のお父さんは現役で見せていましたね。）

Daddy explains the dairy cattle shows in the coliseum, remembering his days of showing.

農業に関心あるなしに関わらず
ものすごい人出。
その理由は食べ物にあるらしい！
フェアでしか食べられない食べ物も多。
綿菓子を何年かぶりにありついたお兄ちゃんたちもご機嫌でしたが、
私たちもクラフト・ビールのテイスティングに満足。

Fair foods were great for both kids and adults. Who (among adults...) wouldn't get excited about the "Land of 10,000 Beers"?

遊園地の乗り物には乗らなかったけれど
わいわいとお祭り気分を味わって帰路につきました。
たまたま載せた写真にはパパに抱っこされていますが、
この日カイカイはとてもよく歩きました！

We didn't even get to the rides but certainly took in the Fair mood. In the pictures, Kaikai is held, but she walked super well that day.

フェアの開催期間中は
家から数ブロック先の通りはフェアに向かう車が往生するくらい混み合っていました。
買い物に行くにも遠回りしなくてはなりません。
それでも毎晩打ち上げられる花火が自分のオフィスの窓からきれいに観賞できることを発見。
本格的な打ち上げ花火で夏を体感できました。

新しい学校生活 [Start of New School]

５月末から始まって9月の頭まで続いた
我が家の夏休みも終わり、
新しい学校生活が始まりました。

The longest possible summer break that started before Memorial Day ended after Labor Day for our family, and life at the new school began. This is the first time the kids are taking the school bus. The boys' bus come to our neighbor with a kindergartener 3 houses down, and a few minutes later, Kaikai's bus comes to our house. The buses come at 7am and they return at 2:30pm. The kids are eating school lunches, which is helping to keep our morning routine manageable. Starting this week (week 3), Taro signed up for jazz band and practices began... at 6:40am on Thursdays.

初めてのスクールバス。
お兄ちゃんたちは3軒向こうの
キンダー生のいるおうちから乗ります。
数分後にカイカイの付き添い付きのバスが
我が家の前に止まってくれます。
朝7時に家を出て帰ってくるのは2時半。
今のところほぼ毎日学校でランチを食べてもらっているので
それほど慌ただしくなく送り出せています。

今週からエイ兄の希望でジャズバンドの練習が始まりました。
週一ですがなんと6時40分から始業まで。
自分の高校時代の朝練を思い出しながら、
でも公共交通手段がないので送ってきました。

この写真は初日の朝。
かなり緊張しています。
エイ兄は各科目ごとに移動しなくてはならない6年生。
初日はちがった教室に行ってばかりで
いろいろな先生に質問して手伝ってもらったようです。
帰りのバスも発車直前まで違うバスに乗っていたのですが、
見知らぬ生徒ばかり（自分の弟も乗っていない）ことを不審に思って、
正しいバスに乗り換えたそうです。

These pictures are from the first day of school. The boys are quite nervous. Taro had to figure out the sixth grade schedule of changing classrooms every period. At the end of the day, he was on the wrong bus until he got off of it to get on the correct one just in time. He comes home with reports of overcoming various challenges, like the lunch line, but he's going with a great attitude every morning. Jiro found himself in the same class with two other friends from the neighborhood and seems to be finding new friends right away. Both boys are burying their noses in books whenever they have spare minutes, which was something that never happened over the summer despite my repeated pleas.

初日以降も学校のランチの列にも並び遅れたり、
と苦労話がつきないお兄ちゃんですが、
毎朝元気に出かけていきます。
ソウ兄は近所の二人の同学年の子とクラスがいっしょで
初日から仲良くなった友達もできて
溶け込んでいる模様。
二人とも夏休み中は私が騒いでも見向きもしなかった読書を
暇さえあればしています。

さてこの方。
最初の数日はお兄ちゃんたちのバスに乗れないのが
面白くなかったようですが、
カイカイのバスがくるよ～というのはわかって
バスがくるとためらわずに乗りこみます。

Now about this girl. She was not happy for the first few days about being stopped from getting on the boys' bus. But, she soon figured out that her bus comes, and she doesn't hesitate to climb in. We get daily notes from her teacher. We also see her work following the weekly themes. There are bits of concern that she might be trying to gauge how much she can get away from doing the work by being cute, like avoiding sitting on a toilet at school. But, she's definitely more verbal. Most times, her babbles are not comprehensible. Just yesterday, I clearly heard from the other side of the house "I love you!" Apparently, it wasn't directed at anyone in particular and was part of a song she learned at school. But, quite impressive how clearly she bellowed the sentence. We could not have asked for a more hopeful start of the school year!

とりあえず毎日担任の先生がノートに書いてくれるので
何をしているか部分的に把握できて感謝しています。
毎週のテーマも月初めの連絡にあって
それに沿ったプリント教材が毎日返ってきます。
かわいくしていれば何もしなくてすむかもしれないと言った
甘えも見えるようで少々心配。
トイレトレも学校では拒否しているようなので
うちだけではさっぱりはかどらないし。
でも学校に通い始めた数日のうちに
家で声を出すことがものすごく増えました。
ほとんど何を言っているのか不明なのですが、
昨日は別の部屋から大きな声で
「アイ・ラブ・ユー」とはっきり聞こえてきてびっくりしました。
誰かに言っているのではなくてどうやら覚えた歌の一部らしいのですが
何を言っているかがわかっただけすばらしい。
何か成長につながってくれそうな予感がします。
