Let’s come back to the point that Willie XXIII made the presentation speech on the Society Forum on October 29th, 2017 on my story, ‘Footprints in the Jungle.’ There, he seems to make unfolding of what Wm. Somerset Maugham actually intended to let the readers know in that story, with the implication how deeply the story is connected with its foregoing Preface of the Volume III. In this Preface, as Willie XXIII has memorized all the sentences, even now, he makes recitation of the whole contents. It starts, with the words, ‘In this final volume I have placed the rest of my stories the scene of which is set in Malaya. They were written long before the Second World War, and I should tell the reader that the sort of life with which they deal no longer exists. When I first visited those countries, the white men and their wives led there differed but little from what they had been twenty five years before. …………’
I must confess now, that, as Willie XXIII now tells me, the Preface in which I intended to tell the readers was full of my excuse and further necessity of digesting act at the side of the readers that the author of these stories, I, wanted the readers reach their own recognition that these stories were based on the reality with proper models to tell what actually happened. I really wanted to tell in the style of story telling the actual lives in those colonial countries proceeded in the course of the British politics managements. The world situation after the War ended in 1945, the Cold War between the Freedom and Communism started, and the fear of atomic power came to the point. I imagined how the world peace could be preserved. As a story writer, and also, a politician in me, I might have been much encouraged to reprint those facts deploring stories which were published long before, and now, after many years, the world consensus has reached such understanding as to accelerate the banning of atomic power proliferation and the people of the whole world have now started to feel any new start of war would ruin the existence of the planet, The Earth itself. I really wanted to tell the most of the world leaders about the matters that actually occurred under their deeds for these several decades of time.
