Many technicians and users often have questions regarding loading and usage of a grease gun. Also, over time, the device starts giving problems, which typically include formation of air pockets in the grease. This hinders the flow of grease from the device. However, there are many tips one can use to overcome these problems. These tips are mainly used for popular grease gun brands which include: National Spencer, Alemite, Lincoln and Graco guns.

Loading the device

Irrespective of whether you are using a manual, pneumatic or batter powered gun, ensure that you are loading it properly. Typically, manual grease guns can be loaded using replacement cartridges. For this task:

· Start by removing the head from the barrel and push it to one side for locking it.

· Now remove the caps provided on both sides of the cartridge and insert this primed up cartridge into the gun's barrel.

· Reattach the gun's head and barrel unit but make sure that the device is only moderately closed. You now have to disengage the plunger rod and push it back into the assembly.

· Now the gun should be ready for use; but if, after a few strokes grease does not flow out, you might have to unscrew the head assembly a few turns to remove trapped air bubbles.

· Now you can re-tighten the unit.

The second method of filling the device is loading it with bulk grease quantities. For this purpose:

· You need to remove the filler plug from the gun's head and insert nipple that attaches to the adapter on the pump.

· Now you can tighten this, but make sure that you remove empty cartridges, if any, in the gun. Failure to do this can disintegrate the cartridge which in turn can clog or damage the gun.

· Now hold the plunger rod and handle in inward position and operate the pump lever so that grease fills inside the gun.

The third method of loading a gun is by suction method.

Now let us discuss some common grease gun problems and the ways for fixing the same:

· The handle of the gun rises when the gun is not being used-Dirt could be trapped inside the inlet ball and seal. For this purpose you may need to undo the unit and clean the ball and seat.

· Handle does not rise at all when needed- Grease being used is too heavy for the device. Use lighter or Grade 2 grease

· Handle keeps bouncing or spring and degrease is not flowing out-Air is trapped inside, or piston might have become detached from piston rod. Try pushing the follower rod or replacing pump. You may also try cleaning valve plate and even replacing piston-rod assembly with a new one.

· Grease leaks from below the strainer cover-Your O-ring could be damaged, and may need replacement.

· Follower plate is jammed-Air leaks or dented pail. You may need to check the bottom of tube assembly and replace the ring as well as try filing the edges smooth and round.

These are some of the typical problems that may arise with a grease gun. Using these tips you can try to repair the device by yourself.
