There are three sections to the exam that NJ Bar Examiners grade. They must be completed within the two-day testing period. These sections are the MBE portion, the New Jersey Essay Exam and the MPT portion.

The MBE portion, orEd Reed Jersey Multistate Bar Exam, consists of 200 multiple choice questions, entirely on general law. Topics include Contracts and Sales, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Real Property, Evidence, and Torts. The Essay and Multistate Performance Test portions also focus on these subjects, but as they pertain to New Jersey law.

NJ Bar Examiners require a minimum average score of 133 to pass the exam. The New Jersey sections are Peppers Jersey graded on a 1-6 point scale and the MPE is graded in total points. Each question is worth one point. The MBE section is worth 35% of the score and the New Jersey sections make up the remaining 65% of the total score.
