Oh well. Braun is paying his debt, such as it is, and next spring will return to the Brewers for spring training. Whether he being truthful now or not probably doesn matter that much if he can be a good citizen. Or hit .330 and drive in 100 runs.
But if Braun is as serious as he claims about making amends, here something he could do: He could push the Major League Baseball Players Association to agree to a tougher testing regime and tougher penalties for those, like himself, who break the rules.
It the only way the game will ever be cleansed of performanceenhancing drugs. The penalties have to outweigh the potential for millions of dollars in salary and endorsements that can be gained by cheating. Either give Commissioner Bud Selig the ability to unilaterally suspend a player for life for the first offense (with a chance for appeal) or give owners the ability to void contracts if players break them by cheating.
We urge the Players Association to work with Selig to put a tougher system in place. And we urge individual players to continue to speak out in favor of tougher rules.
After Braun suspension was announced last month, Detroit Tigers star pitcher Max Scherzer told the Detroit newspapers:
you intentionally cheat this game by using PEDs, the punishment doesn fit the crime yet. You can still benefit financially from doing it. Until we get rid of that incentive, it won be the day we get rid of PEDs.
He also said: gotta start cutting out contracts. I for that.

He said that flight was his life, and he helped make flight a part of Wisconsin's life and heritage. Paul Poberezny, who passed away at 91, created the Oshkoshbased Experimental Aviation Association in his garage, and lived to see its flyins grow from a gathering of 35 aviators in 1953 at Timmerman Field to the event that now draws 10,000 planes and thousands of visitors to central Wisconsin every summer.
Poberezny was named among the "51 Heroes of Aviation" by Flying Magazine, alongside aviators Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, the Wright brothers, John Glenn, Neil Armstrong and Chuck Yeager, the Journal Sentinel reported Thursday. His love of flying and his life in flight made him a part of aviation and Wisconsin history. Not bad for a kid from Milwaukee who started by building airports for is model planes in his family's garden.
Politicians have played games with civil service rules in the past, so it not much of a surprise that Gov. Scott Walker's administration has done the same thing.
A Journal Sentinel Watchdog Report last weekend found that the administration made sure that the new gettough top cop at the state Capitol got a hefty raise by moving him and his top deputy into phantom jobs for a couple of weeks before returning them back to their real posts.
Chief Dave Erwin got a salary hike of 11.7%, to $111,067 a year, the same rate as his predecessor. And Deputy Police Chief Dan Blackdeer pay leaped 14.6%, to $96,048.
During the waning days of Gov. Jim Doyle administration, the Democratic governor administration also found a way to reward favored political appointees. They were transferred into protected civil service positions.
But just because there is bipartisan support for such shenanigans doesn mean they are right. They are not.
In Erwin case, a paperwork error meant he would have made significantly less than the previous Capitol chief, Charles Tubbs, who some Republicans thought was soft on the protesters. The job was mistakenly posted as paying a maximum salary of $99,387. Because of that Doug Martin Black Jersey mistake, he was promised a raise after he finished his probationary period.
Erwin has led a crackdown on Walker protesters at the Capitol. If demonstrators refuse to take out a permit to air their grievances, they are ticketed. Between July 24 and Aug. 6, police issued about 125 citations, nearly all of them for not having a permit.
The demonstrators say they don need a permit. permit is the First Amendment, one chalk artist outside the Capitol wrote on Saturday. That a fine sentiment. But so far, the courts have allowed the permitting process to stand.
Department of Administration spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis defended the raises; she said both men had earned them. She added that the raises were not some kind of reward for the crackdown.
We don begrudge any boss the right to hand out a fat raise if he or she thinks it justified. But civil service rules are in place for good reason to ensure equity. If the administration wants the top cop at the Capitol to make more money, it should work above board through the existing system or recommend ways to make that system work better in such instances.

Newly released emails indicate that in 2010 some of Gov. Scott Walker's campaign staffers played a key role in how county employees responded to the O'Donnell Park tragedy that killed 15yearold Jared Kellner. The idea appears to have been to avoid negative publicity for the thencounty executive in his 2010 race for governor.
Walker campaign manager Keith Gilkes, for example, told a Walker county staffer in a June 24, 2010, email "to make sure there is not a paper anywhere that details a problem at all." And Walker appears to have been at the center of a small circle of campaign staff and county aides who decided how to respond to news stories, media inquiries and records requests about the incident.
This week, Walker put the blame on his political foes at the time, saying they were trying to use the tragedy against Walker, and said county staffers' aim in releasing information was to make sure that a full picture was getting to the public. Maybe the other side did start it, but it seems clear that the response of the Walker campaign with Walker at its center was political, and that it tried to shape the message coming from county employees.
That was at the very least inappropriate, as was Gilkes' direction of county staff. Other political leaders may have done the same sort of thing, but it's inappropriate no matter who does it.
