1906年、オクラホマ準州でのお話。カウボーイのカーリー・マクレインは
「なんて美しい朝！（Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!)
を歌いながら、農場の娘、ローリー・ウィリアムズに会いに来ます。その夜催されるボックス・ソーシャルダンスにローリーを誘うためです。
ボックス・ソーシャルダンスというのは、校舎建設の資金を集めるためにダンスに加えて地元の娘達が用意したランチ・バスケットを競りにかけ、競り落とした男性がバスケットを作った娘とランチを食べるというパーティーです。
カーリーとローリーは、ローリーの叔母エラーの目の前でお互いに憎まれ口をたたき、ローリーはカーリーのせっかくの誘いにも「本気で私を誘うんなら、なんでもっと早く誘いにこないの？ パーティーの当日にやってくるなんてなによ！」というわけで断ってしまいます。
二人ともお互いに好意を抱いているのですが、どちらも意地っ張りで素直に自分の気持ちを伝えられないのでした。
