ヒギンズの家を飛び出したイライザは、フレディと一緒に
古巣のコヴェント・ガーデンの市場に向かいます。
ところが、昔の仲間たちはレディになったイライザがあの
花売り娘とは気づきません。
すっかり気落ちしたイライザの前に、びしっとモーニング
を着込んだ父親のアルフレッドが現れます。
ヒギンズがアメリカの投資家にだした手紙のおかげで、ア
ルフレッドはその投資家の遺産相続人になり、4000ポンド
の年金を受け取る身分になっていたのでした。
おまけに、翌朝には愛人と結婚式を挙げると言うのです。
イライザの姿を見るとアルフレッドは、「お前を引き取る
ことなんか出来やしない。お前なら立派に一人でやってい
けるさ」とすげない態度です。
そして、彼が歌うのが
「時間通りに教会へ（Get Me To The Church On Time)」です。
この親爺、箸にも棒にもかからない、いい加減な男ですが
どこか憎めない人間臭さを持っています。
世の女性たちから大顰蹙をかうのを覚悟で言えば、これも
また男の理想の一つじゃないかと勝手に思っている次第
です（笑）
アルフレッドを演じているスタンレー・ハロウェイが実に
いい味を出してますね。
