In the modern society, more and more people are learning a foreign language for various reasons. Generally, learning a foreign language has a positive impact on them. Therefore, this essay will argue that a learning a foreign language should be compulsory at secondary  school.

First of all, learning a foreign language leads to understanding a foreign culture. The words or phrases in that language sometimes come from their culture. For instance, people in Australia often use the phrase ‘hi, mate’ as hello. It shows that Australia has a more friendly culture than other countries, because  people in other countries often think if the person they get exposed to just now is a stranger, they would not say that person is a friend. As a result, people can experience the culture through  learning the foreign language and it prevents misunderstanding for that culture.

Secondly, learning a foreign language broadens people’s horizons. Learning a foreign language often makes it possible for people to communicate with others who  speak that language. To illustrate, if someone learns English, that can help the person communicate with people who can speak English. Consequently, that person can acquire knowledge and think in the way English people do. This means that people who study a foreign language are more likely to have a wide range of views.

Finally, people who study a foreign language can read a book which is written in that language without translating. When a language is translated, the meaning of words is often changed. For instance, the phrase, ‘Mottainai’ in Japanese is hard to translate. Generally, is has a meaning like ‘ Do not waste things too much’. However, it is not appropriate to say Do not waste things too much  and Mottainai have exactly the same meaning. As a result, it is clear that it is better to read a book without translating when people literally would like to understand what is written in it.

In conclusion, learning a foreign language should be compulsory at secondary school as it can assist people to better understand other cultures, books and to have wide range of views. If people do not learn a foreign language they may live life in  a smaller world.
