Fan Tray

The fan tray is redundant (N+1), field-replaceable from either side, and offers variable speed based on load, temperature, and altitude. Airflow is side-to-side.

Blue Beacon

A blue beacon LED is present on the chassis/fan tray, supervisor, line cards, and power supply to help identify hardware during configuration and troubleshooting. It can be controlled via software.

Architecture

The Catalyst 9400 Series features a centralized architecture with forwarding features and embedded CPUs on the supervisor. It utilizes a passive backplane with up to 480G bandwidth per slot.

UADP ASIC Evolution

The UADP ASIC is central to the Catalyst 9400's capabilities.

  • UADP 2.0XL: Offers up to 240G bandwidth, flexible pipeline, shared lookup tables, up to 32 MB packet buffer, and embedded CPUs.
  • UADP 3.0sec: Provides up to 1.6 Tbps bandwidth, 36 MB unified packet buffer, up to 100G encryption, customizable ASIC templates, and support for higher speeds (1/2.5/5/10/25/40/100G). This ASIC shares performance and scale characteristics with the C9600-SUP-1.

The UADP 2.0 XL and 3.0sec ASICs feature two cores with shared lookup tables, an ingress and egress forwarding controller, and a packet buffer complex. The forwarding pipeline includes multiple programmable stages for flexible feature implementation.

Custom ASIC Templates (SDM)

With UADP 3.0sec on the Catalyst 9400X, custom Switching Database Manager (SDM) templates allow for tailoring ASIC resources (MAC, IPv4/IPv6, ACLs, QoS, NAT, etc.) based on the switch's role in the network (e.g., Access-edge, Core-border). This provides flexibility to optimize for different deployment scenarios. Prior to IOS-XE 17.11, only a default SDM was available.

  • Fast PoE (Roadmap): Aims to restore power to PoE devices (PDs) within 30 seconds of power resumption, bypassing full Cisco IOS control plane boot.

Software Features and High Availability

  • Stateful Switchover (SSO): Provides less than 200ms traffic interruption during a supervisor switchover, with links and uplinks staying active.
  • Software Maintenance Upgrade (SMU): Allows for patching the system. Initially supported with system reload, with In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) options available in later releases.
  • In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU): Enables software upgrades and downgrades without taking the entire switch out of service, leveraging NSF and SSO (available 16.9.1 and later).
  • StackWise Virtual: Allows two Catalyst 9400 switches to be virtualized into a single logical switch, simplifying operations and enhancing bandwidth and resiliency. Supported with specific supervisor models and IOS XE versions.
  • App Hosting: Supports hosting applications directly on the switch, with dedicated interfaces and resources. Multicast support for AppGig interfaces was introduced in IOS-XE 17.11.
  • Increased System MTU: Supports a system MTU of up to 9216 bytes (up from 9198 in releases prior to 17.2.1).
