Mr. Oppie the Odd Can Do Great Things
Robert Oppenheimer was remembered as awfully awkward, tremendously nerdy, and highly irritating boy during his childhood. Who would have thought that he would become one of the world’s most decorated physicist? Responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb, the nuclear physicist was a genius. The book Bomb: The Race to Build -and Steal- the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon, shows the story of Robert Oppenheimer and his help to the Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer is both a rapid contemplator and an absent-minded figure. The personalities that was the cause of the bullying that happened when he was young surprisingly helped Oppenheimer contribute successfully to the building of the atomic bomb.
Many of his fellow scientist had been amazed by how rapidly Oppenheimer’s mind works (Sheinkin 16). Ask him a question in Latin, he can answer them in Greek (Sheinkin 9). Tell him about a new theory, he might disagree. However, if clearly explained, then in an instant, he can process zillions of math equations in his brain and give a final answer (Sheinkin 16). Even when Oppenheimer was at university, he would sometimes interrupt class and go up to the chalkboard, and change the professor’s equation (Sheinkin 9). His classmates would be constantly irritated by him yet him being a fast contemplator, Oppenheimer was also able to gain success. People who can think fast are outstanding at making connections. Unlike other scientist, when the discovery of fission transferred to America, Robert Oppenheimer naturally thought of the idea of building the most powerful weapon. Making such connections, Robert Oppenheimer contributed greatly to the building of the bomb.
Absent-minded behavior is when one is inattentive or forgetful. Robert Oppenheimer fits that word perfectly. Once, he left his girlfriend in the car during a date. He went outside of the car for a walk to contemplate physics when he accidentally went home and fell asleep (Sheinkin 7-8). This is not normal behavior. Some scientists even thought that he wouldn’t be a good leader because of his absent-minded behavior, but they have been proved wrong (Sheinkin 49). He may look like he’s always day dreaming but he is always focused when talking about physics and international affairs. The insignificant conversations and ideas, he doesn’t even need to put any effort on forgetting them but when discussing about important matters he is focused and serious. On one occasion, he was busy making a batch of martinis when Haakon Chevalier tried to persuade him on helping the Soviets gather information. He immediately looked up from his work however, after the topic changed, he went back to his martinis (Sheinkin 65). He is absent-minded but he always keeps in mind the crucial issues. In short, his absent-minded behavior made him successful.
Even though, Robert Oppenheimer’s rapid thinking and absent-mindedness ruined his childhood, it also has helped him on the process of contributing to the building of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer shows us that no matter how different you are, you can still use it as an advantage for yourself. Just like Mr. Oppie the Odd you’ll be capable of doing great things.
