✓ Use a different ball. If you’re bowling on a pattern that has a lot of oil
on a regular basis and your ball just isn’t cutting it, you may need a
more aggressive ball. Talk to the staff at your local pro shop for
recommendations.
✓ Straighten out your hand. Got a drier lane and a ball that’s hooking too
much? Straighten out your hand when you’re bowling and move your
pointer and pinkie fingers out on the ball to create a straighter shot.
✓ Increase your arm swing. Hold the ball higher in order to create a
bigger arm swing if your ball is hooking too much because the lane is a
little dry.
If you’re really struggling on one lane and you’re at the center during open
bowling, ask to switch to another lane. If the center has the space, the staff
may be able to accommodate you. However, a challenge is a challenge, and
sticking it out helps you become a better bowler in the long run.
Bowling around the pattern
After you have an idea of how much oil is on the lane, you have a better idea
of where you should be bowling. Too much oil in the middle? Throw more
toward the outside. Too much oil on the outside? Throw a little straighter
down the middle of the lane. Always strive to find the right angle that will
allow your ball to hit the pins. Because that angle has to get through the oil
on the lane, you need to adjust your angles accordingly
