Problem-Solving Is Almost Everything
'Conversation' is usually 'a spontaneous communication interaction' without
any preparation nor with any rehearsal, we said a few days ago.
But in case of 'English conversation',
the question is 'how we Japanese for whom English is a foreigh language should
do it.'
Or rather, the real question is how to do it with native speakers who don't know
Japanese at all. (The reason of this will be given some other time.)
The method is extremely simple.
What is needed is only to say a very few simple 'problem-solving expressions'
when necessary.
That is, whenever students meet any problem in the interactive communication,
what they have to do is only to say just one simple word or a few simple words
and try to solve the problem with the help of the partner, and to go on understanding
the partner's messages accurately.
This is probably the best and the only way out of problems for anyone in a conversation
in a foreign language.
Such problem-solving expressions for the very beginers of English conversation at our
school have been only the following three: "Pardon??" or "Sorry??", and "Please guess."
Those for basic level students at our school counts 10 in number, which I will introduce
eventually.
