The old farmer presented some fresh vegetables and fruits to the king at his birthday party, placing them among the jewelry and gold. The king looked down at them and then his smile faded. He seemed to have a negative interpretation of it.
【ポイント】
自分の外に存在する1つの出来事、1つの言葉に対する受け取り方は、個人それぞれ違うってことです。それを解釈(interoretations)といいます。オリジナル文章では、農夫は丹精込めて育てた自分の野菜、果物たちなら王様はきっとお喜びになると考えたわけです。ところが、王様は自分の誕生日なのに、こんな野菜、果物をもらってもと思ったのです。なぜか？同じ出来事でも、解釈は人によってさまざまです。人は解釈を自分に置き換えて意味づけを行い、それが自分の行動につながるのです。
have：動作動詞➀、状態動詞②のうち、ここでは、➀。さらに外に持つではなく、内に持つ（こころに抱く）の意のhave.

【ポイント】
cannot でpossibly(30%くらいの頻度)を打ち消しているので、完全にないの意。過去形は、時間から遠い（過去）➀、事実から遠い（仮定）②、感情から遠い（丁寧）③。ここでのcouldn'tは③。

3 訳例：てごたえどう？ 現在からみた過去の出来事。
