6 July 1957: John Lennon meets Paul McCartney

かろうじて
15歳のポール・マッカートニーは、
1957年7月6日に
イギリスのリバプールで
ジョン・レノンのオーディションを受けたとき、
最初の曲として
「Twenty Flight Rock 」

を使用した。

ジョン・レノンは
ザ・クオリーメンというバンドを率い、
リバプールのウールトンにある
セント・ピーターズ教会の
ガーデン・パーティーで

演奏を披露した。

その日曜日の午後、
ポール・マッカートニーは
友人のアイヴァン・ヴォーンとともに
ジョン・レノンが率いるスキッフル・バンド、
ザ・クオリーメン

の演奏を見に
教会を訪れていた。

この時に数曲で

ティーチェスト・ベースを弾いた
アイヴァン・ヴォーンが
ジョン・レノンに
ポール・マッカートニーを

紹介したのだった。

その日、
教会の庭の祭日より前に
聖ペテロ教会ホールで
マッカートニーに
紹介された16歳のレノンは、
彼の新しい知人が
ギターで曲を演奏する能力に
感銘を受けた。

銀糸の刺繍が入った
白いジャケットを着て
スリムな黒いズボンを履いた
ポール・マッカートニーは
チューニングの仕方を教えながら
ジョンとしばらく会話を交わした。
そして

リトル・リチャードの曲のメドレーや、
エディ・コクランの

「Twenty Flight Rock」、
ジーン・ヴィンセントの
「Be-Bop-A-Lula」などを
プレイして見せている。

ジョンに会ったとき、
ポールはその場に
左利き用のギターがなかったため、
普通の右利き用ギターを

逆さにして弾きこなし、
歌も完璧に歌ってみせた。

ポールによると、
ジョンを最も感心させたのは、
ポールが歌詞をすべて正確に
覚えていたことであったという。

「ジョンが「Come Go With Me」を
歌ったのを覚えているよ。

ラジオで聴いて知ったんだね、
バースの部分は知らなかったけれども
コーラスのところは完璧だった。

他の部分は適当にでっち上げて歌っていたね。

「見た目もかっこいいし、

歌も上手い。
本物のリード・シンガーみたいだ」

って思った。

もちろん眼鏡は外していたから
硬い感じもなかったし、
かっこいいなと思ったよ」

ポール・マッカートニー

その出会いの後で
ジョン・レノンと

ピート・ショットンの二人は
ポール・マッカートニーを
ザ・クオリーメンに

入れるかどうかを話し合い、
それが名案だという結論に達したのだった。

2週間後、

ウールトンで自転車に乗っている
ポール・マッカートニーを見つけた
ピート・ショットンは

ポール・マッカートニーに
グループに入らないかと訊ねた。

マッカートニーはしばらく考えた後、
メンバーになることに同意したのだった。
