Here is a tip to create a bootable USB key and install Windows XP from this key.
This is very useful especially for Netbook users but also for any other computer user who does not have a CD player.

I'll just reveal the creation part of the key with Windows XP without addons but know that multiple options are possible such as the addition of Linux, UBCD4WIN or Service Pack.

To begin you will need:

  • A USB key of 1 or 2 GB.
  • An official Windows XP CD in the desired version.
  • A computer containing a CD player and a USB socket (to create the installation USB key).
  • A computer on which we will install Windows.
  • And the wonderful WinSetupFromUSB software.

It will also be necessary that:

  • Your USB key can boot.
  • Your machine accepts booting from your USB key (check in the BIOS).
  • Your key is fast enough to avoid slowness when installing Windows XP.

With FlashBoot

Creation of the USB key

Once downloaded, start the software installation and follow the instructions. At the end of the installation, launch the software with administrator rights (right click => run as an administrator).
You should come across a page like this:

Installing Windows XP

Let's move on to installing XP. Nothing extraordinary except that it happens in 3 stages:
  • At first connect your key to your Netbook and go to the BIOS
  • Then set your BIOS for your PC boot on the USB key;
  • Once done, save and restart your PC;
  • There you will have two lines of the GRUB menu;
  • The first will be to choose the start of the installation;
  • The second line will be for the rest of the installation and the first start of Windows XP;
  • It will boot on the USB key until Windows XP is fully installed.
  • Follow the installation instructions as for a normal installation

Now your Windows XP is installed with your USB key!

      When the graphical installation mode is finished, you can remove your key and boot from the hard drive.

  • The safest way to remove this choice is to go to Start / Control Panel / System . Go to the Advancedtab / Startup and Recovery then uncheck the Show operating system list option
