Bahia Bakari, the 14-year-old survivor was visited by government officials in a Comoros hospital Wednesday. She was conscious with bruises on her face and a gauze bandage on her elbow.
"It is a true miracle. She is a courageous young girl," Alain Joyandet, France's minister for international cooperation, said at the hospital. "She held onto a piece of the plane from 1:30 a.m to 3:00 p.m. She has lost her mother. Her father arrives tomorrow." The girl's father told French radio that his daughter was "fragile" and could "barely swim" but managed to hang on.
Kassim Bakari said he spoke with his oldest daughter by phone after Tuesday's crash. Bahia had left Paris on Monday night with her mother to see family in the Comoros.
He said she was ejected and found herself beside the plane.
"She couldn't feel anything, and found herself in the water. She heard people speaking around her but she couldn't see anyone in the darkness," Mr. Bakari said on France's RTL radio. "She's a very timid girl, I never thought she would escape like that." Said Mohammed, a nurse at El Mararouf hospital in the Comoros capital of Moroni, said the girl was doingｂｖ
The tankan is a key source of information for the BOJ's monetary policy board. Wednesday's results are likely to strengthen the view that the BOJ won't let down its guard soon or end the special programs it put in place to counter the country's credit crunch.
Many of these steps, such as outright purchases of commercial paper and corporate bonds and payment of interest on banks' excess reserves, are due to expire at the end of September, although they may well be extended.
Analysis of Wednesday's tankan was quick to focus on the disappointing expectations for future business investment, a key driver of growth that accounts for 15% of Japan's gross domestic product. The figure suggests domestic demand will likely remain sluggish for the time being.
Big firms plan to lower capital spending by 9.4% in the fiscal year that began in April, the tankan showed. That was revised down from the 6.6% slide projected in the March survey, and would be the sharpest fall since fiscal 1983.
Companies usually give lower estimates at the beginning of the fiscal year and slowly upgrade them as the year progresses. A downward revision at this point therefore is a negative sign showing that real recovery in Japan remains far off, analysts said.
"The biggest concern is firms" plans for business investment, which were downgraded sharply. It's very unusual for June data," said Hiroshi Watanabe, senior economist at Daiwa Institute of Research.
The employment conditions index also indicated that the situation in Japan's labor market has deteriorated, as worsening corporate performance prompts companies to cut costs.
The index, which measures the percentage of firms who think their payrolls are excessive minus those who feel they're insufficient, increased to 23 in June from 20 three months ago.
"Adjustments to the work force are still ongoing, and unemployment issues will get worse ahead," Shinko Research Institute economist Norio Miyagawa said.
Such languishing domestic demand underscores that "the Japanese economy may remain very weak and fragile until 2015," Daiwa's Watanabe added.
