Or, a Latin American town without a central park? Weird...
Newcomers to Quetzaltenango may notice a heartening sight - the central park is temporality closed for renovations. Long-termers are facing a different reality: this has become pretty much a permanent situation.
The park dates from 1880, but took its present from back in 1938. Until 2004, it was one of the social center of town - a place for buskers, sunbakers, pigeon-feeders, gossips and heavy petters to hang out. Then the Committee for the Historical Center announced its intentions to renovate the park. Six wells were dug and various archaeological specimens were extracted. These are still in laboratories, being carbon tested to determined their age, but it is fairly sure that they are from both the pre- and post-Colonial eras.
Work began in earnest in October 2004. The north end of the park was fenced off. The initial idea was to repair the paving, which was lifting and cracking in various places. The plan soon grew to incorporate four stages: 1) restoring the paving and access stairways; 2) restoration of monuments and decorations such as the columns, kiosk, urns and lights; 3) improving disabled access to the park; and 4) finding a "solution" to the informal vendors (shoeshiners, newspaper and fruit vendors, etc) who bring life to the park, but also can impede access.
A semi-controversial plan is also on the table at the moment - to make the sections of the 11th Avenida and 7th Calle that border the park into pedestrian walkways. There have been various reopening dates fro the park, the most recent of which, the 16th of September, sailed past without an official murmur. A major problem confronting construction has been the lack of available funds... it appears that work was started with about half the required cash available. Thanks to a hastily cobbled (sorry) together "buy a brick" campaign and the release of some Municipal emergency funds, work is progressing, and a new date, the 28th of October has been set.

4th family
Spanish Language Schools Guideグアテマラに来てから４番目のホストファミリーに世話になっているが、このホストファミリーをコネクスィオン シェラに加えない事に決めた。別に悪くはないホストファミリーだし、他の留学生を見ても満足しているようだ。それに昔の留学生も戻ってきたりしているという。まあ、誰にでも長所と短所があるようにこの家族にも同様のことが言える。長所はドニャ フロルの出す料理はとてもおいしいことと、留学生と話す時はとてもゆっくり話して、辛抱強く留学生の話を聞く事だ。短所と言えば、雨が降ったとき他の家族の洗濯物は全部取り込まれていたのに、私の靴下とパンツだけはずぶ濡れだったこと。あと家に一つしかテレビがないので、他の人がディスカバリーチャンネルとサッカーをいつも見てるので私のお気に入りのドラマが見れない事（今週で終わりなのに！）。まあ些細なことだ。しかし結局このホストファミリーは他の留学生に来てほしくはなさそうだ。そしてやはり第一印象が良くなかったのかもしれない。私側からでは私が来ると言った日にこのホストファミリーは準備ができていなかった。しかしホストファミリー側からでは私が前もって連絡をしなかったとなる。多分これは個人的な性格の不一致かもしれないが、私のことは色々話したつもりだが、このホストファミリーはどんな家族なのかということがあまり聞けてないので今ひとつ壁がある状態だ。というわけで、このホストファミリーとはあと数日で終わりにしたいと思う。

モモステナンゴ
日曜日の朝に友達とカーペットや毛布やジャンパーとかの羊毛製品で知られているモモステナンゴに行った。しかし友達と行って助かった。モモスへのバスは２０－３０分おきに出ていると聞いていたが、日曜日はどうやらその通りじゃないようで、結局１時間半も待つはめになった。走っているバスが少ないので、バスは超満員で座れる所はなかったし、細い山道を猛スピードで突っ走るバスの中で気持ち悪くなってきた。友達が道を知っていたのでなんとかすし詰め状態のバスでゲロを吐くという大惨事は避けられたが、これではガイドブックを開いてどこで降りるかを確認するどころではなかった。そしてシェラに戻ってみると両腕がまたしてもノミにさされていた。これは間違いなくバスの隣の乗客からもらったようである。目的地では、羊毛製品を作る家族とも会えたし、美味しいトルティーヤとグアカモレもご馳走になれたが、やっぱり今回の旅行での一番の思い出は「旅行なんて大嫌い！」ということ。

「５ マドラストラ」
こんにちは！コネクスィオン シェラの高橋玄です。
La Madrastra (義理の母)最近ドラマ（ソープオペラ）にはまっています。
ほんとごく最近のことできっかけは一ヶ月前に友達のアパートで
世話になってた時からでした。
友達はスペイン語を喋りませんが、アメリカではスペイン語を喋る人が
多いので、ケーブルテレビに加入すると自動的にスペイン語の番組も
ついてくるのです。
そこでいろいろチャンネルを変えてるうちに、Laura Pausiniの歌が
聞こえてきて、それを主題歌に使っているドラマが
La Madrastraだったわけです。

最初はストーリーを掴むのに少々苦労しましたが、今はまあまあ
分かるかなといった具合です。舞台はメキシコの首都、メキシコシティーです。
そこには金持ち家族がいまして、構成は父、叔母二人、子供三人、
でも母親はなし。子供たちはてっきり母親は死んだものと思って
育ってきたわけです。
しかし、そこに主人公であり、本当の母親でもあるマリアが戻ってきます。
無実の殺人容疑からきた二十年の服役期間を終えてです。
そこでドラマが始まるわけですが、いやーなんというか人生における
ストレスがかかる大イベントが目白押しですね。母親と叔母の争い、
出生の秘密、殺人、失業、結婚、出産、浮気、養子縁組、不良息子、
大病と事故とか...
ドラマを見ていて「自分の人生って全然ドラマチックじゃないけど、
このほうがいいかも」なんて考えてます。

Hola mi querido lector!
La Madrastra: Me gusta ver telenovelas. Pues es un habito
que conseguí hace más o menos un mes cuando me
quedaba en el apartamento de mi amigo. Él tenia el cable
y aunque él no hablaba español, el cable incluía los programs
en español ya que hay tanta población latina. Y cuando
cambiaba los canales, oí una canción de Laura Pausini y la
novela que usaba esa canción era La Madrastra. Tuve algunas
dificultades de entender la trama cuando empecé verla pero
creo que entiendo más o menos. Escenario está en D.F. de
México y allí viven una familia rica de papá, 2 tías y 3 hijos,
pero sin mamá. Los hijos han sido crecido creyendo que sus
mamá ya está muerta. Pero Maria la protagonista y la mamá
verdadera se vuelve a esta familia después de estar en prisión
por 20 años bajo la acusación de asesinato. Pues lo que me
impresiona más es la cantidad de los eventos estresantes en
la novela. Desacuerdo entre la madrastra y la tía, saber la
verdad sobre quienes son su padres verdaderos, asesinatos,
pérdida de trabajo, casamiento, nacimiento, infidelidad,
adopción, hijo malcriado, enfermedad y accidente grave, etc
etc. Viendo la novela pienso que "Mi vida no es tan dramática
pero no está mal la vida tranquila".
