Let's be honest. It's impossible to be one hundred percent articulate during an oral presentation that lasts several minutes or longer, unless we're reading from the text. And if you read from the text, it had better have the importance of a State of the Union address, or we, the audience, are bored and wish the speaker had given it to us to read ourselves. However, if you're communicating an idea, persuading your listeners or motivating new actions, the focus is on creating the relationship with your listeners. If there are a few 'ums' or 'uhs,' it's human. We're not machines. It's only when the hesitation is constant or too frequent, Best Mens Bvlgari Watches that audiences notice, and begin to think of the speaker as inarticulate.

Nevertheless, it never fails that I've found clients, when asked to comment on videotapes of their performance, nearly always respond with their 'um' count..."I had four ums." If they're broadcasting breaking news, they are not reading from a teleprompter and are creating their own sentences -and there will be places where they fumble. Remember:

-Audiences relate more often to a 'real person' speaking than to a professional orator. That brief 'um' or other hesitation simply conveys you are normal, spontaneous and sincere.

-If you do catch yourself saying 'um,' don't wince. Why advertise displeasure with your own performance when it isn't rattling your listeners?

-Concentrate on creating two-way communication with your audience. Remember, speaking is a relationship, not a sport with penalty points.

That said, if your 'ums' multiply into 'uummmmmms' in every sentence as you search for the next thought, it is time to develop new coping mechanisms.
