Industry research firm IHS iSuppli recently announced that Apple's real problem may lie in finding replacement sources of the battery and glass required for the iPad. Components such as the NAND flash chips (Toshiba), DRAM parts (Elpida), and even the iPad's compass (AKM Semiconductor) are all fairly easy to replace.
However, the semi-flexible glass found on the iPad's display may be harder to come by. The folks at iSuppli believe that Asahi Glass, based in Japan, supplies Apple with the rare glass, although Apple has not confirmed that Asahi is its provider. The glass maker has reported damage to its facilities, but this may not be the only obstacle in Apple's path. According to a story in The Register and other sources, Toshiba has introduced a new Lithium-Ion battery that can be charged to 80% capacity in under 60 seconds. The remaining 20% take "a few more minutes" to achieve. The new batteries also should be good for 1000 complete life cycles. While we won't see it in small consumer devices like phones for a while, it will be available in cars and other industrial type applications next year.
