★★★★☆
So thrilling and moving.
The main actor is Dev Patel whose movies are all popular. Good actor. And it is directed by the staff made “Border” which is also the movie I recommend.
The story is based on a real story in India in 2008.
One day, terrorism happened in the station, 5 star accommodation “ hotel Mumbai” and another popular places in India, which resulted in more than 100 people were slaughtered. This movie depicted how the brave hotel men saved guest although it could cause more death without their courageous behavior. I don’t know how many times I forgot to breath…
I would not do the same thing if I was in the same situation. I would run away… Maybe it is a natural emotion for all human being, isn’t it?
So the question is ….what things could move people to do like those kinds of brave behavior? It is easy to say “ they are just brave” but I wanna know their mindset psychologically.
I searched….and I found one interesting study.
This research studied 19 adults who donated kidney to strangers. It showed that they have less psychopathic traits(callousness , manipulativeness, and lack of guilt or remorse) and this brain showed larger amygdala which related to recognizing “fear” feeling. It seems that feeling fear prevent helping others, but the opposite is also true that sensitivity to fear enables them to emphasize with other’s distress and moves them to help when help is needed. This study placed altruistic people completely opposite to Psychopathic person.
I do not understand what this research wanted to say. Did they want to suggest that being altruistic is inherent ?
At least it can be said that people having less psychopathic traits could do much more courageous behavior of helping others if m danger cases happen.
From the classic psychological study, Helping behavior is defined as empathy, social exchange theory and by stander effect. It can explain this movie to some extent.
For example, bystander effect could not occur in that situation because there are only hotel men who can help guest. And as to social exchange theory, it means that helping behavior could be promoted in a case of benefit over cost. This is not true of this movie because helping others at risk of being killed seems cost over benefit. However, recently it has been studied as view point of remorse or guilt, which could related to helping behavior. It means that not helping others could bring a feeling of guilt which leads to altruistic behavior. It does make sense that being hotelmen in 5 star accommodation could cause responsibility and guilt to help them.
Anyway, Their brave behavior saved many lives and that should be acclaimed so much.
