幼子のように目の前の現象をただ見つめさない。そして固定観念を捨て謙虚に自然がもたらすどんな深みにも身を委ねなさい。でなければ、自然から何も学びとることができないでしょう。
A caterpillar inches across the desktop, occasionally rising straight up with its antennas quivering. Its movements are instinctual, directed toward sun, moisture, and food. The fragrance of soil and blossom are its guide. A mass of undulating protoplasm, it creeps slowly toward the window and a potted germanium washed in the light from the garden.
The principles which give rise to the caterpillar’s movement underlie that of every living organism. A sense of orientation, of knowing innately which way is up and which way is down, are traits endemic to every species. Whether vegetative, reptilian, quadruped, or biped, each species responds to geotropic and heliotropic impulse. Movement, directionality, orientation in space, and the muscular tones required to move through air, soil, and water fractions, are all part of our innate biological intelligence.
毛虫はゆっくりと机の上を這い、時折触覚を震わせて机をよじ登ろうとする。その動きは本能的であり、太陽や湿度、食物に向かっている。土や花の香りはその道しるべとなります。うねる原形質の集合体は窓に向かってゆっくりと這い上がり、光で洗われたゼラニウムの鉢植えに向かっている。
毛虫の動きを引き起こす原則はすべての生きている生物の基礎となります。方向感覚や登っている、下っている感覚はすべての種に固有の特徴です。植物、爬虫類、四足または二足歩行種のいずれいにおいても地面や日光の刺激に反応している。ムーブメント、志向性、空間認知、筋の緊張は空気や土、水中を動くために必要なもので、私たちの先天的な生物知能の一部です。
