多くの人から聞かれるのが、フレディの一番の思い出であり、この答えはいつも同じです。
フレディを知っていた12年間には、たくさんの思い出がありますが、私にとっていつも際立っていたのは、フレディが家で笑っていたときでした。これはごく普通のことのように思われるでしょうけれど、インタビュー中にフレディが笑ったりするのを見るたびに、彼はいつも上唇を使って歯を覆うか、口を覆っています。その理由は、フレディが自分の歯を嫌い、常に歯を隠そうとしたからです。
とことが、彼が家にいる時は、友人に囲まれた感覚が無いのか、頭をちょっと後ろに引いて、口を大きく開けて大声で笑いました。
フレディ・マーキュリーとしてのロックスターの人格で他人に警戒する必要なく、暖かく、面白く、リラックスした男がそこにいるだけでした。
また、フレディが最後の2週間で快適に過ごせるようにベッドの周りを移動させたときに、フレディの骨が折れたかという話について、皆さんを安心させたいと思います。
フレディは食事や飲酒に興味がなくなってきたため、日ごとに衰弱していましたが、多少の助けを借りて、立って、非常に短い距離を歩くことができました。筋肉の強度がいくらか失われているからといって、自動的に骨の密度が低下しているわけではありません。フレディは、11月20日にガーデンロッジの1階に行き、最後に彼のアート作品をいくつか見たかったのです。テリーが彼を階段の下に運び、フレディは私たちの一人が彼を支えて居間と日本の部屋を歩き回った。フレディは、いくつかの作品をいつどのように入手したかについて話しました。もちろん、残された最後の日までの間、家では静かな雰囲気でしたが、フレディは最後まで私達が知っていたフレディのままでした。
One question I get asked a lot by both fans and during interviews is what is my fondest memory of Freddie and for this my answer is always the same.
There are so many memories for me from the twelve years I knew Freddie, but the moments that always stood out for me were when he was at home laughing. I know this sounds quite ordinary, but whenever you see Freddie smiling or laughing during an interview, he always uses his top lip to cover his teeth, or else he brings up his had to cover his mouth. The reason for this was that he hated his teeth and always tried to cover them up. When he was at home he wasn’t self-conscious surrounded by friends, and he would just throw his head back and laugh out loud with his mouth wide open. Those were the times when the warm, funny and relaxed man was able to appear, without having to be wary of strangers seeing him with out the Freddie Mercury – the Rock Star persona.
I would also like to help put some people’s minds at rest regarding the stories of Freddie’s bones breaking when we were moving him round his bed to get him comfortable in those last two weeks. Yes, Freddie was getting weaker by the day, as he wasn’t very interested in eating or drinking very much, but he was able to stand and to walk very short distances, with some assistance. Just because the muscles are losing some of their strength doesn’t automatically mean that the bones are losing density. Freddie was downstairs in Garden Lodge on the 20th November, as he wanted to see some of his art works for one last time. Terry carried him down the stairs, but he walked around the sitting room and Japanese room with one of us supporting him. He commented on how and when he had acquired a few of the pieces. Of course there was a quiet atmosphere in the house during those last days, but Freddie remained the Freddie we knew until the end.
フレディは最後まで、愛する友人と共に静かに過ごし、最後のほんの数日前まで、アートを見て、しかも自分で歩いて”日本の部屋”に行って、ヒバチや版画や漆の美しい蒔絵など見て喜んでいたんですね。版画をみながら、美佐さんや伊丹さん、ファンの人々、休暇で過ごしたシッピングのことなど色々なことを懐かしんでくれたのかしらね。
JIMの本にもおなじようなことが書かれていましたね。
今日は世界中のファンが、フレディのことを想う特別な日ですね。
