Criminal Minds

Crime rates in the U.S were at an all time high in the 1980's and 90's; the worst year being 1991. This is of course, based on reported crimes. The years 1989-1995 also saw the maximum number of crimes against property, murder, forcible rape and robbery. No exact statistics are available for home invasion, because not all states have defined it, though the accompanying events have been defined as criminal. But from the crimes against property and rape, murder and robbery numbers, we can conclude that quite a few of these must have been home invasions.

Need for Security

Little wonder then that people started thinking of having some kind of security for their homes at around that time. Mind you, in the 1930's and 40's, very simple and basic fore and burglar alarms were introduced by some companies.

But it was only in the early 1990's that home security systems, if they could indeed be called that, were available on a larger scale. Even so, these alarms were not affordable by many, and were not really great at keeping the friendly (or not so friendly) neighborhood burglar away.

In its baby stages, burglar alarms were pressure buttons fitted into door or window frames, and they would be activated when the pressure was released on opening of the door or window. The problems with these buttons were:

You had to be nearby to hear it;

It could be easily disarmed by the intruder;

When more people installed them, there were many false alarms, so many alarms went unreported.

In short there were not very effective. If you were not in earshot when the alarm went off, there was nothing you could do. By closing the entry point (door or window) the alarm would be shut off.

But with the giant strides technology has made, today a wide range of highly effective security systems is on the market from companies like ADT Security Systems. There's also a wide array available: very inexpensive D-I-Y stuff to high end, over the top gizmos that need expert installation.

How it works:

The main principle is the completion of the electric circuit. Depending on your system, it is completed either on opening or closing of the door. When the circuit is altered, the alarm is triggered, and cannot be stopped unless the p[censored] code is punched into the control panel.

Some alarms use even more sophisticated stuff like motion sensors and pressure pads, in combination that can thwart intruders.

The alarm is also not just set off locally. Generally, it is also set off in a remote location where staff monitoring the systems can take necessary steps. This is possible because most home security systems are installed and monitored by large companies with a number of centers to monitor them.

Additional and Modern Services Provided by Home Security Companies

Today home security is not just about preventing possible home invasions and/or robberies.

Most home security providers also have specialized alarms for fire and smoke detection, dangerous gas leaks, unsafe temperatures, and so on.

You can also have video surveillance installed at your home. Now you need open the door only after checking your monitor to see who went knock-knock on your door. You can also check if your young kids are home on time, and if you sitter's looking after them or raiding your refrigerator.

Many companies offer emergency response systems for seniors who live by themselves. This consists of pushing a button which enables them to talk to the monitoring executive. In case of medical emergencies, they can help by dispatching ambulance services or calling neighbors.

Remote controlling of your security is also possible now. You can arm and disarm your security systems no matter where you are.

So you can feel safe at home. After all, your home is your castle!
