Regardless of the size of the business, we know that we need to backup the data. Many businesses use Tape drive for backing up the data. The fact is the average failure rate for tape back up is 100%. That is, at sometime the tape drive will fail. If tape drive malfunctions it will be impossible to restore the data. The scary this is that the tape drives can malfunction without giving any warning signs to the IT technician. Remote backup never fails, if you work with the right provider.
The physical tapes that back up the data can become corrupted for several reasons such as heat or mishandling or virus or intentional damage [by disgruntled staff] etc. If they are corrupted you won't be able to restore the data you need.
Even if there are no threats think of the inconvenience of taking the tapes home every night or remembering to put the right tape in, every day. There are several instances when staff forget to put the right tape in and thereby losing a day's back up. If something were to go wrong, you'd have lost at least one day's worth of data.
According to the US National Archives and Records Administration, 93% of the companies that lost their data for about 10 days closed down their businesses within one year from the time of the loss. And 50% of them are closed down the shop immediately.
Remote backup, also known as offsite backup or online backup is a service. Usually, client software is installed on your server(s). Every night the software sends out the data that were created on the data (incremental or differential data, as it is referred to) to the provider's server. Such software applications usually verify the data that come in so that not any corrupt data are backed up. Once the verification is done, then the software synchronizes with the previous data and a full backup of the data is created.
Since this backup is NOT on your site, you are safe from any disasters that may happen in your office. The remote backup providers usually back up the data on to two or three machines for redundancy so that if one of their servers fails then the data is available on another server.
There is very little a disgruntled staff could do to damage the data if you are using a remote backup service. If there is a problem in the data coming to their servers, the remote backup providers will alert you or call you so that such problems are immediately fixed.
Usually, the providers charge a monthly fee for this service, allowing you to cancel any time.
Remote backup is a new trend. Looking at the "cloud computing" trend, it appears that Remote Backup is here to stay. If there are any disadvantages, the advantages of remote backup certainly outweigh them.
If you are a business owner or a manager in a business you should seriously look into Remote Backup service.
